Mindfully Sustainable, Koru @ SU Feed

BACK TO TEAM PAGE

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Got my windows replaced and didn't even get to log it before the challenge closed! :( Sigh...

Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

I have driven by a house in my neighborhood hundreds of times without noticing the flowers my neighbor planted this summer. I notice colors, shapes, people much more clearly while walking.

    Nature Practice Gratitude for Earth
Kathleen Dean Moore says that a sense of gratitude leads to a sense of moral obligation. Do you agree? How do we cultivate a sense of gratitude as individuals, and as a society?

For me, eating begins with a sense of gratitude for the earth, the farmers, the people who transported the food, and those who cooked it. Gratitude is about being mindful of our privileges and support systems.

    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I do not use any single-use items except frozen vegetable bags. I bought produce at the farmers market to reduce vegetable bag use.

It's the last day of the sugar fast... and someone left a leftover chocolate birthday cake out in the common area. OMG so tempted. I will not go down like this! I'll have to be content with an apple instead...

I use 90% less electricity than the typical American household, but there are still things I can do, like wrapping my water heater pipes and continue to wrap my windows, even though I got a few new ones last year.

I’m attending a seminar in Philly right now.  I am heartened to see how many participants are bringing their own water and coffee containers!  Avoiding single use seems to be catching on.
