Host a House Party
I will host a house party with 15 friends and/or colleagues to watch a movie or present a guest speaker on an environmental issue that matters to me.

Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Energy
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 5 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper each day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
High Impact Action Track
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Health
I will spend 90 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Health
Take Control
Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Simplicity
Research My Investment Portfolio
I will find out what stocks and bonds are in my investment account portfolio to determine if they align with my values (e.g. environmental, social responsibility, community).
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 10 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Simplicity
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a walk for 15 minutes each day.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

Leslie Imhoof 10/22/2019 8:40 AMOne more day to go Team......Let's GOOOOOOO! -
Leslie Imhoof 10/21/2019 2:50 PMI haven't been great lately about walking in. I have more to carry to and from work, and so I've had to drive a bit more. On the flip side, I'm working harder than ever to simplify more and eliminate more unnecessary things, which has been fantastic! -
Leslie Imhoof 10/21/2019 2:47 PMI recently had lunch with a colleague who is also interested in financial responsibility. I would like to invite her over to the house to talk about ways to save money and invite others who are interested in learning to join. We were able to share tips and learn from one another.-
Christian Reifsteck 10/22/2019 7:32 AMI think it would be really great if we could meet as a group to discuss the EcoChallenge in person once it's over. I think another Simplicity Group meeting is in order!

Leslie Imhoof 10/21/2019 2:42 PMTurning the water heater down a couple of degrees had the family up in arms! They revolted. It was a great opportunity though to be reminded of how lucky we are to have warm water, whereas some will never know that luxury.-
Christian Reifsteck 10/22/2019 7:30 AMLeslie, well done waking the family up with a cold shower and a reminder of the fact that we can have hot water whenever we want. Thank you that we have the ability to turn the hot water up or down as we see fit. And...if you keep it turned down, everyone will get used to it. haha

Leslie Imhoof 10/17/2019 2:18 PMLast night I lowered our water heater by several degrees.....this should be fun to see what happens when everyone takes a shower......-
Christian Reifsteck 10/18/2019 11:38 AMGreat job, Leslie! I lowered my water heater temperature last summer and then turned it up a little for this past winter. I'm going to try to keep the temperature down this winter and not turn it up from my summer setting.

Leslie Imhoof 10/16/2019 5:15 AMThe challenge is going great! Our household is monitoring our natural gas usage closely. We have started closing off doors, winterizing and beginning to build our fires in our fireplace to prepare for colder weather.-
Christian Reifsteck 10/16/2019 12:30 PMThis is something I need to do, too: taking out my screens, washing my windows, and sealing them up. Can't believe it's that time of year already.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity MeditateWhat would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?
Leslie Imhoof 10/14/2019 7:46 AMEach night, I choose to listen to a meditation for at least 10 minutes before bed. I look forward to this transition time from being busy to sleep and have found excellent resources online. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?
Leslie Imhoof 10/09/2019 3:08 PMLiving in Europe (Germany) forced me to learn about sustainability earlier than I would have been exposed to in America. One specific and shocking reality that we experienced was the idea that water is charged incoming an outgoing. Meaning, in many countries, a user is responsible for paying for the water that is coming in to a property and the user is also responsible for that outgoing water.
Many people don't understand, this is why Europeans don't always flush the toilet, or will throw out bathwater onto the plants, or simply turn on the shower to wash and then turn off the water to lather up, and turn it on again to rinse. We hosted two Japanese students in our house, and noticed, again, that they are extremely mindful of water consumption incoming and outgoing. Having lived in another culture and being forced to pay attention has made a tremendous difference in my life, and I hope to continue to share that awareness with others. Being open, listening and being mindful to other cultures can bring solutions beyond our own capacities.-
Christian Reifsteck 10/16/2019 12:32 PMLeslie, I didn't know this. Thank you for this insight. I know that Europeans are better at water conservation than we are, including the shower-off-while-lathering technique, but didn't realize there is a charge for outgoing water.
