Linda's actions
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 20-minute walk outside each day.
Transportation
Walk Instead
I will walk 2 mile(s) each day instead of driving and avoid sending up to 1.21 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Linda McMillin 10/22/2019 7:55 AMI’m attending a seminar in Philly right now. I am heartened to see how many participants are bringing their own water and coffee containers! Avoiding single use seems to be catching on. -
Linda McMillin 10/21/2019 9:11 AMI am really enjoying this thankfulness practice. It does impact my overall view of life.-

Linda McMillin 10/17/2019 12:47 PMI got my walking in despite the wind! Christian, your reply yesterday gave me the right encouragement. And the bluster was bracing but fun.-
Christian Reifsteck 10/18/2019 11:33 AMAwesome, Linda! Well done!

Linda McMillin 10/16/2019 11:38 AMRain (and eventually snow and cold) is the biggest challenge to my walking commitments. Yes, I did wimp out and drive to campus today.-
Christian Reifsteck 10/16/2019 12:23 PMYou can do it, Linda! It's a great reminder that you're alive to walk in the cold. Plus, you don't have to wait for your car to heat up, which expels more exhaust into the atmosphere. I know you can conquer the cold!

Linda McMillin 10/15/2019 8:44 AMI wish I could say that I meant to be doubly generous in my $60 donation. But the truth is that I accidentally hit the button twice! Oh well, it’s a good cause! And it helps our team. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Walk InsteadHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Do you feel that this fact applies to you? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?
Linda McMillin 10/14/2019 8:25 AMI am working on making sure I walk to and from campus on a regular basis. That is the short trip that I make the most. I have used a car so often in the past primarily because of time. But now that I am not scheduled as heavily, I am determined to incorporate “muscle power” regularly. The real challenge will be as it gets cold! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Linda McMillin 10/10/2019 6:19 AMI use too many plastic bags at the grocery store for fruits and veggies. I need to purchase reusable bags for this.-
Christian Reifsteck 10/16/2019 12:25 PMI bought unbagged fruit at the grocery store a few weeks ago and decided not to use a bag. I thought this might make checkout more challenging for the cashier, but she didn't even seem to notice they weren't bagged, and if she did, she didn't seem to mind at all. This is something I am going to continue to do.
