To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Personal Waste Audit
Why is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?

When I see my garbage laid out in front of me I’m forced to look at my waste. For me, I think of ways I could’ve avoided it.

Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

I plant a food garden in the back area of my apartment complex every spring. This year I will make an extra effort to include native plants and vary the shape/color/structure of the garden to encourage other pollinators to feel welcome in the garden too :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Walk Instead
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Do you feel that this fact applies to you? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?

Walking instead of driving to work is really enjoyable for me. It allows time for reflection and thought, de-stresses, provides an extra opportunity for light exercise and, of course reduces traffic and co2 emissions. I tend to walk to work more in the Fall and Spring when the weather isn't too rainy or too hot, but this year will make an effort to incorporate more walk-commutes year-round.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Forage for My Food
People are motivated to forage for many different reasons: as a source for food, a means of income, to connect with nature, to participate in cultural tradition, transmitting specific ecological knowledge, or as a means of stewarding local and native plant populations. What is your chief motivation for foraging?

Connecting with nature and cherishing all the healthy foods that grow are near and dear to my heart.

I love this fruit and veggie challenge.  I've  tried a kombacha squash for the first time and begun prepping my veggies for easy sacking, i.e. cutting up bell peppers, radishes and jicama.

My husband gifted me with a portable metal straw to replace in plastic ones. I haven't used it yet because I haven't purchased any drinks requiring a straw, but when I do I'm ready.  My next goal is to begin carrying my own silverware because I do purchase a lot of food cart / take out type meals.

My husband gifted me with a metal carry straw.  I haven't used it yet, because I've reduced my take out consumption.  Now I'd like to set a goal of carrying my own silverware; I eat out a lot.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

I'm excited that through the goals I've set in our Ecochallenge that I am now consistently bringing my own bags to the grocery store, including ones for fruits and vegetables!  What you practice grows stronger!

Health Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
To what extent do you believe that environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?

There's a lot of research out there regarding both the personal safety and environmental factors of products. Since I already switched to most natural cleaners, I focused my search on my makeup, hair and body products. What I hypothesized was true, the cheaper products were not as safe for my body or the environment. I was happy to confirm this and am willing to be more focused in my purchases going forward.

I volunteered tonight at a local non profit who assist families with clothing, diapers and household items. Tonight I assisted families gathering winter coats, snowpants, boots, gloves and hats. I knew a few of the families from the schools and know there's a huge need in our community.
