REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Peggy La Point 10/23/2019 2:11 PMWhen I see my garbage laid out in front of me I’m forced to look at my waste. For me, I think of ways I could’ve avoided it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Locally-Sourced MealsIf you were to only eat what is in season locally, what would be the hardest food item for you to give up?
Peggy La Point 10/21/2019 6:17 PMProbably bananas. Generally speaking we eat what`s in season. The exceptions are bananas, cucumbers and eggplant. It helps that apples can be kept in cold storage because we eat those a lot through most of the year. -
Peggy La Point 10/13/2019 6:28 PMI just made laundry detergent from horse chestnuts and it seems to have worked pretty well. Here’s the recipe:
Got horse chestnut trees around you? There are tons of these in PDX. It’s that time of year when they drop these wooden nuggets. Did you know you can make a very effective and completely zero-waste (and free!) laundry soap from them? Yup! Chop them in quarters while they’re still soft, or pound them with a hammer when they get tougher to expose the waxy nut inside - this has high saponin - the cleaning agent in soaps and detergents. Soak a big handful (shells are fine) in hot water for a few hours or overnight. It’s not exact science - maybe 3-5 chestnuts per cup - then strain. Use a 1/2 c-1 c of the liquid per load depending on size. Add a few drops of essential oil if you’d like! Cloths come out clean and soft. If you make a big batch all at once, keep the soap liquid in your fridge. 🌰🌰🌰 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Peggy La Point 10/12/2019 5:14 PMThere are so many places to explore in Oregon and each time I explore a new area I have a greater appreciation for the state. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Zero-Waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
Peggy La Point 10/07/2019 8:24 PMA few years ago I discovered a recipe to make tomato sauce out of tomato skins. So now when I harvest all of my tomatoes and freeze them, I freeze the skins separately. I sometimes save carrot tops and other veggies for chicken stock, but our neighbors just got rabbits, so lately I`ve been saving them for her rabbits.-
Kimberly Tan 10/07/2019 8:35 PMYou can also save all your vegetables and fruit waste for composting. It's a great way to keep your plants healthy without buying chemical fertilizers. All you need is to add some apple cider vinegar with the mother, water and some sugar. that will kick start the composting effectively.

Peggy La Point 10/06/2019 8:39 PMIf you`re on FB, I recommend joining your local Buy Nothing Group. It`s a great way to get to know your neighbors, share items that you`re no longer using and receive goods that are new-to-you. Last weekend I picked up Columbia ski jacket & pants for my 13 year old who`s grown 3 inches in less than a year! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Peggy La Point 10/04/2019 6:14 PMShowing and expressing gratitude, for me, fills my heart and just makes me happier. It`s really true that when you do or say something nice to others, you end up feeling better. That certainly motivates me to continue to spread good cheer and nothing bad can come of that. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity De-Clutter My HomeHow can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?
Peggy La Point 10/03/2019 1:19 PMEach time I think about buying something I try to stop myself and really think about whether or not I need it and/or truly LOVE it. Or am I just buying it because I have money in my pocket. More than half the time, I do pretty well, but I'd like to be more consistent. -
Peggy La Point 10/03/2019 8:37 AMIf you check in every day during the first week (October 2-8) you`ll be entered in a drawing to win this reusable storage bag. If you missed a day, you can go back & record your activities for the previous day! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Walk InsteadHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Do you feel that this fact applies to you? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?
-
Peggy La Point 10/02/2019 4:12 PMMost of my trips are under 4 miles and 75% of those are done via walking, biking or bus. I tend to drive when the weather is really bad or when I work early. Need to get creative & figure out how I can continue using alternatives during those times.
