Elaine's actions
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 6 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper each day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 2 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 3 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth More Fruits and VeggiesHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Elaine Ferrell-Burns 10/21/2019 8:18 PMI love this fruit and veggie challenge. I've tried a kombacha squash for the first time and begun prepping my veggies for easy sacking, i.e. cutting up bell peppers, radishes and jicama. -
Elaine Ferrell-Burns 10/21/2019 8:05 PMMy husband gifted me with a portable metal straw to replace in plastic ones. I haven't used it yet because I haven't purchased any drinks requiring a straw, but when I do I'm ready. My next goal is to begin carrying my own silverware because I do purchase a lot of food cart / take out type meals. -
Elaine Ferrell-Burns 10/21/2019 8:04 PMMy husband gifted me with a metal carry straw. I haven't used it yet, because I've reduced my take out consumption. Now I'd like to set a goal of carrying my own silverware; I eat out a lot. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Elaine Ferrell-Burns 10/21/2019 8:02 PMI'm excited that through the goals I've set in our Ecochallenge that I am now consistently bringing my own bags to the grocery store, including ones for fruits and vegetables! What you practice grows stronger! -
Elaine Ferrell-Burns 10/19/2019 7:05 AMChallenge is going well. Still working on a checkoff type grocery list to better organize my purchases and shopping days. -
Elaine Ferrell-Burns 10/19/2019 7:05 AMChallenge is going very well. Still working on creating a check off box grocery list to better organize my purchases and shopping days. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Elaine Ferrell-Burns 10/19/2019 7:03 AMI carry a metal straw in my car, but it doesn't fit in my purse. I noticed that places like Starbucks are starting to lid drinks with sippy type mouths, not straw holes; this is progess with the industry. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Choose Two-Sided PrintingChoosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?
Elaine Ferrell-Burns 10/19/2019 7:02 AMWhat steps can I take to increase going paperless? For example, pay bills online instead of by hard copy in the us post without compromising my personal financial data. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Elaine Ferrell-Burns 10/14/2019 6:46 AMHow can I reduce food waste, save money, eat more mindfully, thus healthily, and reduce air pollution with gas emissions? Answer: meal plan and designate grocery shopping days = pre thought out food choices, less time, money, pollution randomly running to the grocery store. Tools: WW meal planning form and a grocery/home supply pre printed check off list mounted to the frig. -
Elaine Ferrell-Burns 10/14/2019 6:35 AMI think I've finally established the habit of bringing my reusable grocery bags with me. I want to change my daily action of composting to a goal for meal planning and grocery shopping and will consult with my team captain to figure out how to make the change.
