    Water 5-Minute Showers
Five minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?

Instead of taking a fifteen minute shower daily.  I have been taking five minute showers this has been cutting the water use by almost half.  Not only that by reducing the amount of hot water used in the shower can conserve water as well as the energy used to heat the water.

    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

I am getting in a daily habit of using a travel coffee and tea mug and filing it from home each morning.

I really enjoyed this challenge.  I did not choose a lot of daily challenges and that helped keep me focused and on track.  I also enjoyed the links to articles - not having to search online for information was helpful.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Reduce refined sugar
Before you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?

This is a tough one-but making progress.  It appears that my intake of sugar is simply habitual and working on breaking the cycle.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Eliminate Toxic Plastics
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I have been bringing my own water from home in a metal thermos and using my own bags at the grocery store. My kids are using reusable straws at home and in their lunch box for school.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

Currently my exercise program isn't much, but every day my coworker and I have been taking a 20-30 minute walk.  It has been great to get out of the office and talk on our walks.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Whole Foods Diet
Michael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this idea?

I know I have definitely started feeling better now that I am eating better, I have been able to eliminate some of the medicines I have been taking.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

Depending on the store, most of the time I carry the items out in my hand if I don't bring a bag in.  I keep a stack of reusable bags in my car so that I have them when I go to the store.

I agree, the majority of the time I carry reusable bags in my car.  If I do not have them in my car, I will purchase a reusable bag or if I have a few items I will carry them in a cart or my hands.  Also, I have used Kroger's or Meijer's, etc. plastics bags, I have brought them back to the store.  The grocery stores has a container for reusable plastic bags to recycle.

I am spending about 5 hours a week going through my grown children's reusable clothes and toys and donating them to the Salvation Army

    Simplicity Needs Vs. Wants
How is creativity necessary for practicing simplicity?

Learning a Need vs a Want has been a very rewarding challenge for me. The last couple weeks I have pushed myself to stop and think before making a purchase by asking myself how would this purchase help me and the environment in the long run. No more impulse buying for me!
