Well, acute sinus infection and bronchitis have knocked me out of all the exercise items.  Not a good round for me at all.

Too sick to do anything, especially walk or exercise.

I am struggling with the challenges right now as I have a severe sinus infection.  My cheek bones feel like they will crack!  Off to the doctor.

Back pain means exercise is not possible.  I intended doing this for health but right now health means I can’t do it.  Frustrating.

How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

I really like fruits and vegetables more than meat.  Fruits and vegetables are more sustainable than meat, contribute less to air pollution and, for me, are healthier.  But agriculture has more than a few problems in the US.  One is monoculture, growing a single type of potatoes for example.  If potatoes were suddenly hit by some pest or disease, we would have no potatoes at all - as the problem with bananas.

The second problem is the damage to the environment by using pesticides, too many chemicals and uncontrolled water.  The spillover destroys habitat and damages water bodies (Lake Erie, Chesapeake Bay, rivers).

What environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?

Air quality is one of the biggest items affecting human health in my area and that quality is dramatically affected by overuse of single driver transportation to almost everything.  The vehicles emit pollution and burn through enormous quantities of gasoline.

A developing issue in my opinion is the problem of dust, pollen and mold spores spread by the high winds we are experiencing this year.  These all affect people with breathing issues and allergies, making outdoor activities uncomfortable as well as affecting health itself.

We are planting 2 new street trees in cooperation with the city.  I'm very happy about this EXCEPT the city keeps recommending low-litter male trees which are HORRIBLE for allergy sufferers!  I'm insisting on female trees that don't cause allergies.  A bit more to clean up each year, but at least I'm not making my neighbors miserable.  I'm always stunned how many municipalities don't consider the problem of air-borne allergens when planting.

How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

I like to walk as I see the environment:  the trees, flower gardens, small animals like rabbits and chipmunks, birds, even the sky.  I would not see any of this if I were driving.;  And I tend to walk in areas where I couldn’t or wouldn’t drive:  parks, the neighborhood.
