    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

It took me an embarrassingly long time to remember to bring my bags from the car into the grocery store.  So my deal with myself was, if I forgot, I just put all the items back in the cart and pushed it out to the car, and packed the bags there.  It also helped me (and my husband) to get smushable canvas bags instead of the plasticy material kind.  The plasticy material kind fold up OK, but you really have to fold them or you have this big stack in the backseat.  Canvas collapses easier.  I got his thru our NPR donation (they give canvas totes as gifts) and mine were matching beach totes new at Goodwill for $1 each.  They've got to be 3 years old, and good as new.

Reviewed my property tax bill today.  Biggest line item (beyond the base) is for trash pick up.  The health of our planet *should* be important enough for us to cut our waste streams, but I can't help thinking some incentive for composting, for recycling, would help people do more of that.  The bill is unchanged whether you stuff your bins with pizza boxes, or only put them out once a month.  Different incentives drive different people.

I measured (again) the backyard as we dither over whether to build a 1 story or 2 story granny flat.  The 2 story takes up less yard space, but will shade more of the garden.  Ooops!  That garden, that growing area is important to me!

Today, I recover the seats of my patio furniture (bought second hand).  We have lost so many simple skills, generation by generation.  Or maybe it's just that younger generations lack TIME because they're working like maniacs to make ends meet.  I know my kids do.  Trying to teach the grand kids that they can physically affect their environments.

Fallout of the PG&E shutdown has been seeking more information about the utility itself, the conditions of California's forests, the preventive measures in place and still needed, and how an individual can harden their own space.  Talking with some hardheaded friends on the internet about it, too.

Wasteless meal production:  I honestly feel like I'm cheating a bit here.  We have urban chickens, so all the wilted lettuce, old grapes and unhappy tomatoes are gleefully consumed by them.  We have dogs, so scraps of this/that/the other (carrots, potato, even asparagus) can go into their cooked foods.  I did try putting veggie peels and offcuts in a carton in the freezer in order to make veggie soup stock, but I felt like I was depriving the animals.  About the only thing I can't interest an animal in is onions, and those "feed" the compost bin.    I'm not having the same kind of food waste problem some other folks are having.

Been thinking a lot about how we can live more like our grandparents.  Yes, some things have changed -- the rise in pathogens, the weather being more extreme.  But our grandparents managed to buy and transport meat without plastics.  Our grandparents opened and closed windows on rotation to take advantage of the natural heating and cooling in the house.  They figured out where the sun porch belonged, where the sleeping porch should be.  We've unlearned a lot of things we should relearn.
