Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

This does not surprise me. I would use the money to buy the highest quality local (as much as possible) foods, all the time or possibly hire an organic food delivery service. Possibly pay bills or adventure locally.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health Go get a check up
How do you practice self care?

Making a doctor's appointment was a big deal for me. But self-care is very important. I meditate, take walks to get up from my desk, take my meds on time every day. There are lots of ways to practice self-care, I consider even painting nails to be a form of it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Go Paperless
Reducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

I have changed all of my paper billing to paperless and have even called some junk mail companies to have me taken off their lists. I love it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Launch a Recycling Program
How might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems differently?

It all starts with one action and one person. I was so inspired by Greta Thornberg and how she has risen up to inspire millions. I choose to make at least one difference every day in the way I do things, to help make the world a better place.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

I am very lucky to work for the Zoo, in that I can't throw a rock without hitting someone who knows what goes where at what time depending on what it is made of. I am very lucky that my colleagues know how important simple actions are and are willing to help me find what I need when I need it.

Today I built a birdhouse using a recycled plastic carton I had waiting to go into the recycling. Easy and fun crafts out of recycled materials just seems like a no-brainer.

Sometimes the thought of changing my routine seems daunting, especially when I see others counteracting my efforts. The biggest discourager is picking up trash in my local park every day. There is always something new to pick up and it seems never-ending. But if I don't do it, who will? My new mantra has become, "My thoughtful actions today will cancel out someone's ignorant inactions."
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water 5-Minute Showers
Five minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?

Taking a 5-minute shower has not been as challenging as I predicted. I go in with intention. It also helps that I have very short hair :)
I have been hand washing my dishes when I have the time to do so as well, instead of using my dishwasher for everything!

Today, I went and got a 2-pack of reusable bottles from Costco. I recycled the packaging, of course. Now I have one bottle for my office, one for my car, and one I am supposed to take everywhere with me. I am so excited, and now I have zero need and zero excuses to ever need a plastic water bottle again. :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

Sometimes I will forget my bottle at home or work. Getting more than one reusable bottle will help the need to stop somewhere and get a plastic bottle.
