Simplicity
Research Impact Investing
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing and determine if it is right for me.
Simplicity
Research My Investment Portfolio
I will find out what stocks and bonds are in my investment account portfolio to determine if they align with my values (e.g. environmental, social responsibility, community).
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Energy
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 1 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Food
Zero-Waste Cooking
I will cook 2 meal(s) with zero-waste each day
Health
Know My health
I will get my Core Four Biometrics tests (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI).
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
I will spend 30 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home.
Participant Feed

Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Maren Tonnies 10/20/2019 11:23 PMIt feels a bit lonely at the top ;-) come on guys! We need some action in this team! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Maren Tonnies 10/20/2019 11:22 PMI should really think more about what I buy. Not just what kind of product, but mostly the amount. It is crazy if I calculate what I throw away every year. This is so not necessary and such a waste. It's also really expensive if you about it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Maren Tonnies 10/20/2019 11:20 PMI chose to limit the amount of clothes I have and don't really follow every fashion trend. Luckily, the things I like are all items that are sort of timeless. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Maren Tonnies 10/20/2019 11:19 PMI will get a "nee-nee" sticker from city hall. I can easily avoid getting a lot of flyers, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
Maren Tonnies 10/20/2019 11:14 PMFood Sovereignty asserts that the people who produce, distribute, and consume food should control the mechanisms and policies of food production and distribution, rather than the corporations and market institutions they believe have come to dominate the global food system. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Choose Clean/Renewable EnergyHow might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to clean energy?
Maren Tonnies 10/20/2019 11:13 PMBy talking about the extremely low costs of my supplier. Especially if you are "ZZP-er" then you can jump into an energy collective. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
Maren Tonnies 10/20/2019 11:11 PMChoose the right energy supplier! If you get your power from Vattenfall (NL) then you will get a free LED lightbulb. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Research Impact InvestingHow might impact investing help you better live your values?
Maren Tonnies 10/20/2019 3:20 AMI feel confident about where my money goes. By having a closer look at my investments, it would feel weird if I would judge others but not doing my part. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Research My Investment PortfolioIn what ways can you increase the positive impacts and decrease the negative impacts of your financial investments?
Maren Tonnies 10/20/2019 3:19 AMI try to only invest in organisations that focus on the future. It's really important to dive deeper into your investments. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my HomeTo what extent do you believe that environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?
Maren Tonnies 10/20/2019 3:17 AMI think we underestimate in general what kind of impact it has. I was a bit shocked by finding out what kind of products I had in my house.
