REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Forage for My FoodPeople are motivated to forage for many different reasons: as a source for food, a means of income, to connect with nature, to participate in cultural tradition, transmitting specific ecological knowledge, or as a means of stewarding local and native plant populations. What is your chief motivation for foraging?
Paul Scott 10/22/2019 6:42 AMI have been foraging for food for a couple of years but the resources on the Ecochallenge site definitely gave me some new knowledge and inspiration. I was excited by the global map of neighborhood trees that promise foraged delights. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Mulch the Base of Trees and PlantsWhere are your nearest natural bodies of water? How might they be affected by runoff?
Paul Scott 10/22/2019 6:40 AMWe mulch our trees and shrubs a couple of times a year, in the endless pursuit of greater soil fertility and water retention. The mulch makes the garden look fantastic and the trees always seem thankful. Lovely. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Carry my TrashWhat one thing could you do right away to reduce your waste?
Paul Scott 10/05/2019 3:22 PMI must say that one of the ancillary benefits to doing this (the primary being that lots of people ask you why you're carrying around a garbage bag all day), is that the practice discourages a person from buying or even using things that generate trash. I have carried a trash bag around for three days now but not had a single thing to throw in it. Everything I've used has been recyclable or compostible, and this is far from normal for me, or so I assume. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Paul Scott 10/03/2019 6:46 AMThis is one that requires consistent reminders for me. I rarely eat any meat in my breakfast, but lunch is all about left overs, so sticking to the two veggie meals a day means I have to shift my family dinner planning a bit. My kids are real meat eaters still, so we have meat at most of our dinners. I just have to be sure there's enough leftovers of the starches and vegetables for a healthy left-over lunch the next day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Go for a Daily WalkFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Paul Scott 10/03/2019 6:32 AMI mistakenly gave myself two task around walking and I have not figured out how to delete one. I might as well offer two reflections. Another great thing about walking is that it reintroduces you to a totally different concept of time and distance. I live in Berkeley, CA and often think of different spots in my hometown entirely in terms of how long it takes to drive there and what the traffic conditions are like at various times of day. On foot, nothing is very far in Berkeley and there's never traffic. Time and space become richer, more nuanced, and more convivial. Nice. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Paul Scott 10/03/2019 6:29 AMI started a commitment to 10,000 steps daily back in August and I have to say I am feeling better than I have in years.-
Addy Davidson 10/03/2019 8:27 AMMe, too. Haven't always hit the number, though. :( I put a stationary bike under my standing desk, but I don't get "credit" for pedalling unless I move my watch to my ankle. Feel like a prisoner with an ankle monitor! (Just joking).
