At my work, I'm part of our Green Team, where we focus on sustainability within our store. Today for our monthly meeting we did an hour long trash clean up around our store. We picked up about three buckets worth of trash which mostly consisted of single use plastics and cigarette butts. It was unfortunate to see how much trash people are letting go into their local neighborhood and pollute the local environment. So, it felt good to take an hour out of my day to make the neighborhood look a little better and remove trash from the environment.

It's been nice planning more meals at the beginning of my week so I'm more prepared for the week but also so I don't waste as much food. This forces me to shop only for the things I need since I know what meals I'll be making through out the week. I'm excited to start planning my meals for next week now.

Today I didn't meet any of my goals, unfortunately, but like the challenge says theres always tomorrow. As it gets colder, and wetter, outside I'll have to find other ways to go spend time in nature, which has been one of my biggest goals.

    Water 5-Minute Showers
Five minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?

Taking a five minute shower is hard for me because I love taking long showers so this has been a good test for me. Reducing my excess water use in other areas, like washing dishes, is another step I can take.

    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

That is a pretty shocking number, I wouldn't have guessed the average family throws out 240 lbs a year. When I start to think of the amount of times I get produce, forget to use it, and then throw it out I realized how much that could add up. I never think about how I'm not only throwing out food but also wasting money. $1,500 could be spent on so many other things rather than just being thrown away. This is an even better reason to meal prep for the week and only buy enough food for what I need so I can reduce the amount of waste I produce and food I throw away.

I've been loving going outside for at least thirty minuets each day. Not only has it been nice outside, so I've got to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, but I also get some exercise in as I usually go on a walk. So, I feel like I've been able to appreciate nature more while also making healthy choices.

    Health Eliminate Toxic Plastics
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

Although I have reusable bags, and try my best to use them, I still have a tendency to get plastic bags because I forget my bags or forget to tell the cashier I don't need a bag. I want to work on just saying no to plastic bags even when I forget my own. The same thing goes for plastic straws because they usually aren't necessary they are just convenient.

Its awesome that you are at least putting in the effort to stay on track with your devotion! I forget my reusable bags ALL THE TIME, but if what i can carry is small enough ill just put it in my backpack or carry it in my arms, otherwise ask for paper and reuse if for something else or use the material for some project! Keep doing you!!

Today I began to look up how I can start composting in my own home. This is something I've wanted to try for awhile but have never taken the time to actually figure out how to do it. For the most part it seems like a relatively easy thing to begin doing. The only issue I can see is where I will take my compost once it begins to get full.

For the first two days of the challenge I tried to pick actions that felt easier to accomplish in one day, which is why I chose spending time in nature and preparing two of my meals. Both of these actions were easy for me to complete and reminded me how I can take simple actions that still have a big impact.

    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

I think spending time in nature can be a spiritual experience especially when you realize how connected we are to everything around us. My goal is to spend more time outside so I can foster a deeper connection with nature and hopefully this will help me develop in an emotional and spiritual way. The implications of spending too much time indoors is that we lose our connection with nature and no longer consider it a part of ourselves and our life. When this happens it becomes easier to not care what is happening to this thing that no longer feels like a part of you.
