hannah's actions
Nature
Tend a Garden
I will tend to a garden each day, or work on starting one.
Create Your Own Action
Exercise at least 30 minutes per day
the official action didn't work.
Simplicity
Track my Purchases
I will spend 15 minutes each day maintaining a record of all my purchases and learning about my spending habits.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
High Impact Action Track
Install Alternative Energy
Energy
I will install alternative energy systems, such as solar electric systems or solar water heaters.
High Impact Action Track
Ditch the Lawn
Water
I will replace my lawn with a drought-tolerant landscape and save the water, money, and time I used to spend cutting the grass.
Nature
Forage for My Food
I will use the 'Learn More' resources below to find where I can forage for my own food locally.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 60 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Water
Fix Leaky Faucets
I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities that have been wasting up to 9 gallons (34 L) of water per faucet every day.
Transportation
Choose a Carbon Offset
If buying a plane ticket, I will also buy a carbon offset.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 3 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Water
Insulate Water Pipes and Water Heater
I will avoid wasting water while waiting for the shower or sink to heat up.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Eco-friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
hannah ovre 10/17/2019 9:49 AMBees, moths, butterflies, and other insects are all important pollinators. Crops such as fruit trees would not exist and produce fruit without pollinators. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Switch to Cold WaterWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
hannah ovre 10/17/2019 9:45 AMI used the money to start an indoor vegetable garden so I can grow fresh, out of season (aka $$) veggies at staggered harvest periods. 120W of LED lights turned on for 16 hours a day costs less than $4/month to run - about the same price as a package of baby bok choy and some green onions, both of which I use often. This will end up paying for itself very quickly because of the energy efficiency. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Install Alternative EnergyHow is your region being affected by climate change? How will it be affected in the future?
hannah ovre 10/08/2019 12:13 PMAccording to statesatrisk.com, climate change in Idaho would mean more mosquitoes, more risk of drought leading to increased risk to potato crops and trout and increased risk of wildfires.-
Kelsey Behm 10/09/2019 7:42 AMJust this week we are seeing the effects of changing weather. Farmers are struggling to get their crops out of the ground before the big freeze that starts tonight. They have been working LONG days to harvest as much as possible.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Choose a Carbon OffsetA round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?
hannah ovre 10/08/2019 12:03 PMThe airports that I am flying through this holiday season have new programs to purchase carbon offsets. Driving in my car from NYC to LA would produce only about .8 tons of CO2. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Forage for My FoodPeople are motivated to forage for many different reasons: as a source for food, a means of income, to connect with nature, to participate in cultural tradition, transmitting specific ecological knowledge, or as a means of stewarding local and native plant populations. What is your chief motivation for foraging?
hannah ovre 10/08/2019 11:56 AMNot letting nearby fruit & plants go unharvested before buying commercially shipped/packed/processed food. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Ditch the LawnWhat is the main water source in your region?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Fix Leaky FaucetsFixing leaky faucets is one of the tasks that we can easily put off until later. Good job on completing this action! How will you use the momentum from completing this action to increase your water efficiency in other ways?
hannah ovre 10/04/2019 9:53 AMMaking sure the water heater is maintained before winter and up to date. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Insulate Water Pipes and Water HeaterHow do you think climate change will affect your region’s water supply? Think about the effects of weather, storms, salinity, and sea level rise, among other changes. How can you find out more about climate change’s impact to your region's water?
hannah ovre 10/04/2019 9:17 AMClimate change has a drastic impact on mountains and glaciers, which are doubly affected by temperature and precipitation. Snow fall levels and snow retention rates in the spring/summer have a huge impact downstream when they melt too fast and aren't replenished. The water is important for rivers and streams which hundreds, if not thousands, of miles of ecosystems depend on.
