  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Eco-friendly Gardening
What are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

Water rights to the canal are an important issue in the Ammon area.

    Nature Support Local Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

    hannah ovre's avatar
    hannah ovre 10/17/2019 9:49 AM
Bees, moths, butterflies, and other insects are all important pollinators. Crops such as fruit trees would not exist and produce fruit without pollinators.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Switch to Cold Water
What do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?

I used the money to start an indoor vegetable garden so I can grow fresh, out of season (aka $$) veggies at staggered harvest periods. 120W of LED lights turned on for 16 hours a day costs less than $4/month to run - about the same price as a package of baby bok choy and some green onions, both of which I use often. This will end up paying for itself very quickly because of the energy efficiency.

How is your region being affected by climate change? How will it be affected in the future?

According to statesatrisk.com, climate change in Idaho would mean more mosquitoes, more risk of drought leading to increased risk to potato crops and trout and increased risk of wildfires.

Just this week we are seeing the effects of changing weather. Farmers are struggling to get their crops out of the ground before the big freeze that starts tonight. They have been working LONG days to harvest as much as possible.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Choose a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

    hannah ovre's avatar
    hannah ovre 10/08/2019 12:03 PM
The airports that I am flying through this holiday season have new programs to purchase carbon offsets. Driving in my car from NYC to LA would produce only about .8 tons of CO2.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Forage for My Food
People are motivated to forage for many different reasons: as a source for food, a means of income, to connect with nature, to participate in cultural tradition, transmitting specific ecological knowledge, or as a means of stewarding local and native plant populations. What is your chief motivation for foraging?

Not letting nearby fruit & plants go unharvested before buying commercially shipped/packed/processed food.

All of the water for my house's landscaping comes from the canal.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Fix Leaky Faucets
Fixing leaky faucets is one of the tasks that we can easily put off until later. Good job on completing this action! How will you use the momentum from completing this action to increase your water efficiency in other ways?

    hannah ovre 10/04/2019 9:53 AM
Making sure the water heater is maintained before winter and up to date.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Insulate Water Pipes and Water Heater
How do you think climate change will affect your region’s water supply? Think about the effects of weather, storms, salinity, and sea level rise, among other changes. How can you find out more about climate change’s impact to your region's water?

    hannah ovre's avatar
    hannah ovre 10/04/2019 9:17 AM
Climate change has a drastic impact on mountains and glaciers, which are doubly affected by temperature and precipitation. Snow fall levels and snow retention rates in the spring/summer have a huge impact downstream when they melt too fast and aren't replenished. The water is important for rivers and streams which hundreds, if not thousands, of miles of ecosystems depend on.
