Charlotte's actions
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 2 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Food
Whole Foods Diet
I will enjoy 3 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.

Charlotte Michaelis 10/19/2019 4:49 PMI found a water brand that is fully recyclable and paper based with a compostable lid! For all of you who constantly forget your water bottle like myself. They carry this brand at natural grocers :) -
Charlotte Michaelis 10/09/2019 12:14 PMIt’s been going well! Going to start carrying a reusable fork in my purse for food carts, I had to use a plastic fork the other day when I ordered from one-
Juanita Lognion 10/09/2019 1:10 PMYes I like the reusable combination fork and spoon. I carry a pair of chopsticks with me. They are easy to clean and have their own wrap.

Charlotte Michaelis 10/04/2019 4:01 PMChallenge is going good so far. I’ve been mindful about keeping my reusable bags on me and it made me much more aware of the waste I was contributing by drinking coffee in disposable cups at work! Using my refillable cup now :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Charlotte Michaelis 10/02/2019 1:12 PMNo more vegetable bags or bottled teas. Bring my own from home or use reusable cloth veggie bags. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Charlotte Michaelis 10/02/2019 1:11 PMBeef in particular is a huge strain on our environment. I'm committing to eating 2 meals a day vegan and dinner will be chicken or fish, lamb if I'm needed an iron boost.-
Heidi Sickert 10/05/2019 3:06 PMI'm doing the same Charlotte and have found that several veggie products actually have more iron than meat, like broccoli, lentils and cashews. Red meat also creates a lot of stomach acid and that affects your digestion, complexion and mood. Hope it's going well!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Foods DietMichael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this idea?
Charlotte Michaelis 10/02/2019 1:09 PMI try to do this anyway but being more vigilant will keep me out of taco bell. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Charlotte Michaelis 10/02/2019 1:07 PMI have plenty of these but I always leave them at home. Then I'll use paper bags. I'll make a conscious effort to put them back in my car. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Charlotte Michaelis 10/02/2019 1:05 PMLike I'm adding less plastic waste to our world. Breaking the habit is only a problem with convenience but I plan on keeping a spare mug in my car.
