Mary's actions
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper each day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or some other small improvement.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Health
Learn More about Food Deserts
I will spend 30 minutes learning about food deserts and find out how I can advocate for healthy and fresh food in my region.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 3 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Simplicity
Research Impact Investing
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing and determine if it is right for me.
Energy
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Nature
Forage for My Food
I will use the 'Learn More' resources below to find where I can forage for my own food locally.
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Forage for My FoodPeople are motivated to forage for many different reasons: as a source for food, a means of income, to connect with nature, to participate in cultural tradition, transmitting specific ecological knowledge, or as a means of stewarding local and native plant populations. What is your chief motivation for foraging?
Mary Hartshorn 10/18/2019 1:05 PMI think it's really cool to know what foods we can and cannot eat that are around us. In case of a natural disaster (or a zombie apocalypse!) it's a good resource to have. -
Mary Hartshorn 10/18/2019 1:01 PMI just updated everyone at City Hall's stars. They look so nice and colorful! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Choose Clean/Renewable EnergyHow might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to clean energy?
Mary Hartshorn 10/17/2019 9:47 AMWhenever I am at a fair or event were our electric company has a booth I encourage the people I am with to sign up! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Research Impact InvestingHow might impact investing help you better live your values?
Mary Hartshorn 10/17/2019 9:42 AMI really like the idea of impact investing but I don't think it is something that I am ready to do myself. Money drives a lot of things so it's nice to know that it is helping make a difference in our world and environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
Mary Hartshorn 10/17/2019 9:38 AMIt seems a bit more expensive to upgrade to LED bulbs but from what I can tell it will save money in the long run. Another thing I do to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions is ride the bus to work.
