Maygan's actions
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Community
Help Others
I will offer to help 1 person(s) who are in need each day.
Simplicity
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will spend at least 5 minutes finding out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in my curbside bin.
Waste
Launch a Recycling Program
I will start a recycling program at my workplace or school. If a recycling program exists, I will advocate for ways to improve and expand it.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Go get a check upHow do you practice self care?
Maygan Fashiola 10/02/2019 9:13 AMMaking a doctor's appointment was a big deal for me. But self-care is very important. I meditate, take walks to get up from my desk, take my meds on time every day. There are lots of ways to practice self-care, I consider even painting nails to be a form of it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Maygan Fashiola 9/24/2019 11:43 AMI have changed all of my paper billing to paperless and have even called some junk mail companies to have me taken off their lists. I love it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Launch a Recycling ProgramHow might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems differently?
Maygan Fashiola 9/24/2019 11:42 AMIt all starts with one action and one person. I was so inspired by Greta Thornberg and how she has risen up to inspire millions. I choose to make at least one difference every day in the way I do things, to help make the world a better place. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Maygan Fashiola 9/24/2019 11:38 AMI am very lucky to work for the Zoo, in that I can't throw a rock without hitting someone who knows what goes where at what time depending on what it is made of. I am very lucky that my colleagues know how important simple actions are and are willing to help me find what I need when I need it. -
Maygan Fashiola 9/16/2019 12:53 PMToday I built a birdhouse using a recycled plastic carton I had waiting to go into the recycling. Easy and fun crafts out of recycled materials just seems like a no-brainer. -
Maygan Fashiola 9/15/2019 9:53 AMSometimes the thought of changing my routine seems daunting, especially when I see others counteracting my efforts. The biggest discourager is picking up trash in my local park every day. There is always something new to pick up and it seems never-ending. But if I don't do it, who will? My new mantra has become, "My thoughtful actions today will cancel out someone's ignorant inactions."-

Cheryl Blacher 9/17/2019 1:35 PMI sometimes do the same thing! And then I get to enjoy how nice and clean it looks for a while.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?
Maygan Fashiola 9/15/2019 9:50 AMTaking a 5-minute shower has not been as challenging as I predicted. I go in with intention. It also helps that I have very short hair :)
I have been hand washing my dishes when I have the time to do so as well, instead of using my dishwasher for everything! -
Maygan Fashiola 9/08/2019 11:03 AMToday, I went and got a 2-pack of reusable bottles from Costco. I recycled the packaging, of course. Now I have one bottle for my office, one for my car, and one I am supposed to take everywhere with me. I am so excited, and now I have zero need and zero excuses to ever need a plastic water bottle again. :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Maygan Fashiola 9/05/2019 1:59 PMSometimes I will forget my bottle at home or work. Getting more than one reusable bottle will help the need to stop somewhere and get a plastic bottle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Maygan Fashiola 9/05/2019 1:58 PMPlastic bags are a big staple in my house. I would like to use one less plastic bag per day.
