What is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?

I volunteer with a dog rescue and they are very sustainable by eliminating waste. Food, medicine and equipment that is uneaten will be given to a foster dog in need. Instead of purchasing all new items things are shared and traded. While this may be little, this eliminates landfill waste.

High Impact Action Track Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I also do not use plastic vegetable bags at the grocery because i figure i wash it anyways.
I brought my own fork to use for lunch today. I also brought my own tumbler and plastic reusable straw for my cold brew.

The amount of plastic in the produce aisle has always blown my mind. It really frustrates me when I have to get a cucumber, herbs or other product and they come in a plastic wrap or container.

    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

I brought my own cup to Starbucks for a cold brew, I was thinking that Starbucks should charge a premium for disposable cups vs. offering a savings to those who bring a reusable one.

I believe they still take 10 cents off your bill if you bring your own cup. But you're right, the incentive should be better!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

I often throw items into my purse! I store larger bags in my car and a compact one in purse for times when I need it. I skip the produce bags at the grocery store because I am going to wash it anyways!
