Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

Eco-friendly Gardening

I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.

Host a House Party

I will host a house party with 10 friends and/or colleagues to watch a movie or present a guest speaker on an environmental issue that matters to me.

Recycle Everything I Can

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.

Turn it off

I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Recycle Everything I Can
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

I have trouble with things like light bulbs and batteries and, actually, prescription drugs that are leftover. I know drugs aren't RECYCLABLE, but how do you dispose of responsibly. I thought I could take them to CVS, but not true.

How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

I feel happy that at least half of our power here in NC is generated by nuclear plants. With our home solar system of 17 kwh, a significant amount is renewable. NC is also 2nd in the nation for solar. We're making progress!

Yesterday we talked a little bit about carbon offset purchases and how that works. Here's some of what I found in NC:

    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?

2-sided printing is the default for my department. The real trick is to get people to avoid printing altogether. Take your notes in a notebook or on a portable device. Think about how often you pitch presentations from meetings, etc.

Yesterday I learned that over 60,000 square feet of space in 526 S. Church street is taken up by storage of paper and floppy disks. Yes, floppy disks.

Saturday my husband and I joined other volunteers in planting 73 trees in the Cotswold Homes Community with TreesCharlotte! This coming Thursday we'll help give away 100 maple trees to other Charlotte residents. Since its inception in 2012, TreesCharlotte has planted or distributed over 32,000 trees!

High Impact Action Track Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

What a convenience-driven society we have become! So much just caters to that to the point we don't need to THINK! I was in the grocery store and was truly amazed by all the single-serve separately packaged items. And I'm as guilty of buying them as anyone. Is it really that hard to put a serving of yogurt in a bowl or a "Tupperware" container? Do I NEED a piece of cheese to be packaged in a separate bit of plastic and packaged with other ones in a bigger bit of plastic? Can't I just cut a piece of cheese off a brick of it? Of course, I can. I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

    Water Eco-friendly Gardening
What are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

Right now drought is a definite concern. There is a pond in my backyard that is a habitat for a number of animals and birds. The water level is lower than it has ever been. I've been doing rain dances to no avail!
