High Impact Action Track
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Waste
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
High Impact Action Track
Stay on the Ground
Transportation
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
High Impact Action Track
Talk To My Friends and Colleagues
Community
I will research the social or environmental issues in my community that matter to me and tell friends and/or colleagues each day about what I learn.
High Impact Action Track
Ditch the Lawn
Water
I will replace my lawn with a drought-tolerant landscape and save the water, money, and time I used to spend cutting the grass.
High Impact Action Track
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Health
I will spend minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Riley Berger 10/02/2019 4:09 PMThis was an easy change as soon as I found a reusable coffee cup that I liked. I much prefer to make coffee at home and bring it with me, and it feels good to save money and the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Ditch the LawnWhat is the main water source in your region?
Riley Berger 10/02/2019 4:07 PMThe Bull Run Watershed is the main water source for Portland, Oregon. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Riley Berger 10/02/2019 4:07 PMFolks of lower socioeconomic class suffer most for environmental degradation, and due to historic redlining in Portland, these people are majority people of color and
immigrants. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Riley Berger 10/02/2019 4:06 PMIt's difficult to restructure a trip for work, but taking less flights for vacation is an extremely depressing way to make a great impact for the planet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Riley Berger 10/02/2019 4:04 PMSometimes I use the plastic produce bags at the grocery store when I end up there unexpectedly. Storing reusable bags in the car would help a lot! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Riley Berger 10/02/2019 4:01 PMConvenience is the only barrier that I face - if I was better prepared in the morning, I would always have a water bottle with me!
