Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION

I like to read, complete crosswords, be outside and many other things. I think Self care is vital especially when we work in an industry constantly assisting others.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Reduce refined sugar
Before you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?

    Kathryn Adair 10/18/2019 9:15 AM
Yes definitely addicted to sugar. I am feeling surprisingly more energized. I still consume sugar but in less quantities!

What most interested or surprised you about your own energy footprint?

I didn't realize how many things within my rented apartment I can adjust to assist within the realms of not owning a home. I was already completing a lot of these things but was excited to discuss with my landlord our heating situation and other items!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Kathryn Adair's avatar
    Kathryn Adair 10/11/2019 4:30 PM
I used to use plastic bags and straws but I have worked hard on substituting them. If I am in a store and forgot my reusable bag, if I can carry everything out in my arms or purse I will omit a bag or buy a new reusable bag.

Additionally, I have lowered my online shopping to cut down on cardboard and other waste.

I have a pack of small cutlery in my purse that I carry for both hubby and me.  Includes a metal straw.  I gave these packs (available from a wide variety of vendors) to my daughter, my sisters, my friends for Xmas 2 years ago so they would all have them easily at hand to cut down on plastic use.  Last Xmas, I made beewax wraps in assorted sizes as gifts, to reduce the use of plastic film.  Got the grandkids excited about making them.  We have to pass down the information, as well as use it ourselves.

What did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?

Stepping away from my phone or tv has been a great thing for me to do. I have enjoyed completing working on my puzzle with friends and joining a book club!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

Every time we are purposefully acknowledging and keeping our focus on the positive it centers us to remember that good things exist among this difficult journey called life. We also realize there is so much more than ourselves in this world! Focusing on gratitude has been very refreshing for me.
