I use a lot of pencils- I just researched which is better for the environment:  mechanical vs wood.  The answer isn't simple.  Wood decomposes but the lead is thicker and, depending on how the trees were harvested, the impact could be bad.  If you "don't lose things" you could be helping the environment by getting mechanical pencils and keeping them for a long time.  My question is- what if your eraser on the wooden pencil runs out?  Then you get those add-on erasers which fall apart- or you throw out the pencil before it's used up.  Not sure which way to go- ideas?

    Food Plant an Herb Garden
Consider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?

I'm noticing that herb gardens often renew themselves!  You have to be careful with oregano because it chokes other herbs like thyme.  Basil reseeds itself and returns in the spring if you let it die in the planter.  Parsley has a few different lives throughout the spring, summer, fall.

I've been enjoying "renting" clothes from LeTote-  they have an enviro-friendly cleaning practice for all rented clothes.  We've noticed that we're doing much less laundry since I started using this service.  And it's helped to clean out the closet, too!

In our department we have a new initiative, eliminating lots of paper- all forms for students playing on departmental recitals are now online.  It's been a long time coming but it's working great!

    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

I used to have a bag that attached to my purse but it's gone missing!  It's much more challenging to refuse plastic bags since I lost my special one.  We did just purchase silicon bags for leftovers, trying to reduce ziploc bags in the kitchen.

Here's a rescue when you forget reusable bags: Keep a box or crate or an extra totebag  in the trunk of your car. If you forget your bag at the check out, just load everything back in your shopping cart and wheel it to your car. Unload into your box, crate or tote.

    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

Hardly any food goes in the disposal or garbage anymore.  Nice fresh air when you take food outside!  Need to learn more about what kinds of papers can go on compost.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Go Paperless
Reducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

I love not receiving paper bills via US Post.  It feels great!  So much less clutter in the file cabinet- in fact, who needs a file cabinet?  Next up for me:  write fewer checks.

Agree! Now how to stop the Bulk mailing, ads, store circulars, and other unwanted junk mail???
