Bryan's actions
Health
Take Control
Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Transportation
Use Public Transit
I will use public transit 28 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to 30.31 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 3 meatless meal(s) and/or 3 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 45-minute walk outside each day.
Nature
Leave No Trace
I will practice the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 15 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Health
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Bryan Tierney 10/21/2019 11:31 AMThis is a big one in my book of ethics. Being outdoors in Nature and enjoying the locations you visit can create a sense of ownership and place in your favorite place. When I was a park ranger I always looked for ways to help the park users take ownership of the places I patrolled because then they would help keep the park clean and make sure to hold each other accountable for following the rules to conserve/preserve the space. Nothing like hiking to the top of a mountain to give you a sense of place or hiking to a lake in back country or even doing a hike around a local nature park! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Bryan Tierney 10/21/2019 11:28 AMWe have all types of electricity generation here in the Pacific Northwest, hydro power, wind power and back in the 90's we even had the Trojan nuclear power plant. The hydro generation from dams impacts native fish populations and creates barriers for them to survive plus opens up a buffet for Sea lions along the Columbia but wind power turbines cause issue for migratory bird populations as well. Have you ever gone to the Forest away from any electricity source and felt the calmness? Then while out come close the the power lines that are inevitably strung across them only to feel the amp's following through you? It is something else and I am sure we are being affected by all the energy sources that surround use and all the radio waves from all our wireless internet and smartphones. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Bryan Tierney 10/21/2019 11:23 AMThe consumption of meat impacts the quality of our personal health and the global environment. Animals used for meat production contribute to harmful greenhouse gases and also too much meat consumption is not good for our health as humans. Try eating at least a meal a week without meat or even do a whole day meat free to help cut down on your contributions to this. My family has! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Bryan Tierney 10/21/2019 11:21 AMI feel the specific area I am called to work on is to take care of the developed and semi developed or wilderness area's even that I recreate in in our National Forest's to preserve and conserve this wonderful resource for future generations!
