Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.

Colin Szuch 10/05/2019 7:14 AMFlushing when necessary is important to save on water. However, one might wonder: necessary could be after each use of the toilet, correct? While that is true, sometimes toilets, and even water for this matter, are used too often. Try to use water only when it is necessary (i.e., flushing the toilet, washing hands, washing dishes, showering, etc.), limit the amount of time the water is on, and limit the amount of hot water used as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity necessary for practicing simplicity?
Colin Szuch 10/05/2019 7:10 AMBeing creative may allow one to find alternate solutions to something they want and/or need; adopting new ways to get something you desire may lead you to a more simplistic approach. Largely contingent upon what the individual is looking for. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Colin Szuch 10/05/2019 7:09 AMUsing a reusable bottle is excellent for reducing the amount of plastic that one would use and that is put into the environment. It is imperative that we all are mindful of the amount of plastic we generate and how we can reduce that amount. Reusable bottles and mugs are perfect starting points. -
Colin Szuch 10/05/2019 6:58 AMOwning reusable bags - for any purpose - is something I implore everyone to do. Having reusable bags handy, especially if you are shopping, will be very beneficial in eliminating the use of plastic bags. Reusable bags are typically not very expensive. Please be sure to purchase them wherever you see them for sale - it will contribute a lot to the elimination of plastic bags! -
Colin Szuch 10/03/2019 2:25 PMThe reduction of water was a great challenge! It really allowed me follow a discipline and understand - more than I already know - how vital each flush, shower, and drop of water is for this beautiful world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Conserve Toilet WaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Colin Szuch 10/03/2019 2:24 PM- Flushing water when necessary.
- Reducing time spent in the shower.
- Reducing the amount of hot water used.
- Using water from the tap and/or refrigerator.
- Cease the purchasing of bottled water. -
Colin Szuch 10/03/2019 9:01 AMEnvironmental Action RULES! LED light bulbs rock!
It is imperative to understand how electricity is produced and the correlation it has with our environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Colin Szuch 10/03/2019 8:58 AMNew Hampshire: primarily nuclear and natural gas.
This impacts the environment, animals, and humans in a multitude of negative ways. Some of which are: increased CO2 emissions (natural gas), waste disposal (nuclear), air pollution (natural gas), water pollution (natural gas), ocean acidification (natural gas).
