  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

I usually make purchases from places that offer paper bags, that way I can reuse/recycle them. Often times when I do need a bag and only plastic is offered I will reuse the bag until it falls apart. I use plastic bags to deep condition my hair, I have a bag from about 4 years ago that I still use for this process.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Go Paperless
Reducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

I don't need a piece of paper to tell me something I can find on the internet, I don't need a paper copy of my bank statement...all of this will just get shredded and recycled anyway. Why not save the paper from the start. I feel more empowered by this change. I always say I want to change my eating habits to reflect the change I want to see in the environment (buying local, buying organic, choosing vegan options once a week), this challenge is helping me reflect and make a plan to do the things I say I want to do.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Use Public Transit
The US spends roughly 20% of its federal budget on defense. In contrast, 2% goes to education, 20% goes to social security and 3% goes to transportation infrastructure. Do these numbers surprise you at all? Why or why not? How would you adjust them if you could?

This does not surprise me. However, I think that Portland does an amazing job to increase the use of public transportation and bicycles. Our public transit system is very efficient and accessible. It has been taking proper steps to branch out farther into different areas. There is room for improvement but I think those areas have been addressed and are probably being worked on. (The education funding is pathetic!!!)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Take Control
How do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?

I instantly thought of the Locard Exchange Principle, stating that everything we touch, we leave traces of ourselves behind...and vice versa. This rings true for our environment and our community. how we live impacts the world around us and it impacts us.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Know My health
How do you deal with the physical and emotional stress of the big problems we face? How can you help others cope?

I fortunately have found a positive outlet for my frustration. I love to sing and it helps me calm down in any situation. Also getting in touch with my higher being, praying, reading my Bible...things of that nature. I often ask people what makes them happy, start by doing that and expand on it.

Self-Care Sunday is a real thing for me. I make my own masks to help myself relax, I get in touch with my creative side and write poems, and once a month I go get a 90 minute massage. #TreatYoself!
