Ryan Sotomayor 10/20/2019 10:27 AMWorking at a community center with a fitness room makes it really easy to exercise 5 days a week, but it's really hard to get motivated do any exercise on my days off. Bike has a flat, so my goal is to fix the flat and start riding on the off days. -
Ryan Sotomayor 10/19/2019 9:46 AMOh, dang am I feeling some feelings today. This week I had both the "impossible" and "beyond" burgers from fast food drive thru. While technically vegan/vegetarian, I was hoping to go the whole challenge without fast food. Ah well, next year then. Gonna focus on the fresh veggies and fruit for the last few days of the challenge, for sure. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Ryan Sotomayor 10/19/2019 9:37 AMI have multiple reusable water bottles at work and at home now. My main struggle is when I'm on the go and I've forgotten a water bottle. It's hard not to dart into a mini mart and grab a sparkling water. I do try to reuse that bottle throughout the day and then recycle it, but just bringing the dang thing every time would make it permanent. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Ryan Sotomayor 10/15/2019 10:40 AMEven after making the change I find it’s most difficult to remember to bring the dang thing! -
Ryan Sotomayor 10/15/2019 10:39 AMIt’s hard to get outside and exercise some days, for sure. It’s too bad they haven’t invented bike desks that could generate electricity and power. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Ryan Sotomayor 10/14/2019 12:16 PMEverything seems much more familiar and immediate when walking. To quote a punk rock band, "Walking is still honest." Also, since walking is the first form of transport for so many of us it's a way to connect to both our ancestors and the earth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Ryan Sotomayor 10/13/2019 10:45 AMI am trying to go on a long walk outside with my kids on my days off. I can invite friends along, and find or organize a hiking group. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Ryan Sotomayor 10/12/2019 1:34 PMWith the links between industrial civilization and factory farms wealthier countries have the capacity to use more resources whether by capital or force. Factory farms are among the worst contributors to ecological damage and deterioration. So, the destruction of ecosystems is clear as forests are cleared for factory farms. It contributes to the unsustainable nature of industrial civilization unchecked. -
Ryan Sotomayor 10/11/2019 6:24 AMBest/worst green smoothie: 2 cups water, 2 cups spicy greens, 2 apples, handful of chopped veggies, blend with ice. Really hits you in the sinuses. -
Ryan Sotomayor 10/07/2019 1:24 PMHas anyone else heard that if you drink 16 - 32 ounces of water first thing after you wake up it jump starts your metabolism? I'm not sure of the science but I want to read more into it. Been trying to drink 2 large glasses of water when I wake up, but I don't always remember.
