High Impact Action Track
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Waste
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper each day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.

Michaeline Shuman 10/23/2019 6:26 AMThinking way ahead I'll share that my staff decided to do a "white elephant" gift exchange last year with a commitment to not buy anything new, just find stuff at home to include in a fun gift exchange. Then we drew numbers and everyone could choose a gift or "steal" someones -- great way to keep consumerism down for the upcoming holiday season! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity necessary for practicing simplicity?
Michaeline Shuman 10/17/2019 5:12 AMFor me it means considering what I am thinking about tossing or sending to community aid and asking how I could reuse it or repurpose it in the future. It does mean storing some items however I've been successful in not having to buy craft supplies such as cotton batting when my daughter has needed "stuffing" for a school project -- we just took it from an old throw pillow that was being stored for possible future use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Michaeline Shuman 10/16/2019 5:42 AMI'm reading more and more about how the production of meat/meat products is harming our environment and health. Hoping to transition back to a much more plant based diet and this ecochallenge is helping me towards my goal! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

Michaeline Shuman 10/14/2019 5:24 AMBeing mindful about my consumption and waste this week. Goal: no wasted leftovers! Started today with a salad that includes several small portions of leftover veggies and chicken from last week's meals. -
Michaeline Shuman 10/13/2019 10:14 AMTook my own cup to one event today and didn't have to use a disposable cup! -
Michaeline Shuman 10/11/2019 7:26 AMI see you on top of the leader board for our team Michelle Harman! Congrats! -
Michaeline Shuman 10/08/2019 6:02 AMPro tip: Many restaurants will let you use your own beverage container if they have a self-serve beverage station. I've done this at Mod and Panera recently after asking staff! -
Michaeline Shuman 10/06/2019 4:42 PMJust remembered to log in over the weekend...my achiever talent keeping me going on the ecochallenge ;-) -
