Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

We've pretty much cut out use of straws whenever possible, and have also cut down on coffee cups and try to use reusable cups at coffee shops whenever we can.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

I've carried things out in my hands or pockets when I don't have reusable bag available! If we do accept a bag, we try to make sure it is reusable or return a plastic one once getting things to the car. My wife and I have started to keep reusable bags in in the back of the car instead of hoping we remember to take them to the store.

    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?

I can help encourage others to make the same switch to double-sided printing by talking about it, as well as making sure all my printing is double-sided whenever possible. It can be encouraged company-wide by having that option readily available in the printer settings as well.
