Okay, *maybe* it's cheating, but I'm counting the window upgrade because, even though they're not in yet, I ordered them! We had two that absolutely needed replacement before winter, and with Menards sale, plus some "credit" slips we had from other returns, etc., we were able to go on and purchase two, to replace the worst of them. It is our goal to have them all upgraded within the next year, but two is a start! I'll take it!

The other thing I am counting, is that the water pressure pump in our house was extremely old and outdated, never mind that it was leaking water into its diaphragm, which was a waste of water. We had a local plumber replace it (to the tune of $792!! Ouch!!!). BUT, it is energy-efficient, and won't waste water, moving forward. Score TWO for the environment!!! :)

I've got someone coming out on the 30th to connect my wind turbine to the grid! WHOO-HOO!!! I guess, technically, I haven't "completed" it yet, I *HAVE* purchased the equipment and made the appointment, so I'm counting it! Looking very forward to watching the electricity meter roll backwards! YAY!!! Harness what God gives us, and make it work!!!

How do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?

    Chris Odeen's avatar
    Chris Odeen 10/16/2019 10:32 PM
I have noted that my personal health suffers when my environmental health suffers. This is important from both a physical standpoint, as well as a psychological standpoint. When there is too much clutter (see: Simplify challenges!!!), my mental health is terrible. But, when there are too many allergens, too many "scents," too many issues with local water, etc., even considering pesticides on fruits/vegetables? I notice that I feel more "ailing," I have less focus, etc. A stupid example? I *NEVER* feel as "nourished" from a store-bought tomato as I do from one that I have organically-grown, fertilized with worm castings, and nurtured. It can't just be me. I believe these kinds of things *have* to be affecting the community-at-large, even if they have grown so accustomed to "supermarket produce" that they no longer notice the difference. Isn't that the tragedy? Folks become so accustomed, they no longer remember that things were once -and could again be!- different!

My why was fairly simple: 1. I had been VERY motivated for some of these activities, back in the Spring and early summer, when we first bought our house. I was ALL about declutter, simplify, reduce footprint (our new place is out in the country), increase energy efficiency, and install a wind turbine. They were all on the list. The weekend we got the keys, my husband had a heart attack and required surgery. The summer we intended to absolutely blow through the house and move Labor Day weekend was spent with him in cardiac rehab and my doing demo alone (I clock in at about 100 pounds... even with the help of a young man we hired, we didn't make *nearly* the progress to be able to actually move)... so now, we're months away from moving, and I got completely off-track with the projects.

This Ecochallenge was the perfect opportunity to kick-start my motivation once again! I picked some of the actions (i.e., windows, renewable energy source) specifically because they were on the "list" from the start! Now it's time to make it happen, before winter, before the ground freezes (when it can benefit Western's team! lol).

I was pleasantly surprised by how many of the "challenges" I already do, which was encouraging, because I really do try to be mindful about our environment, reducing our carbon footprint, recycling wherever possible (even in things like refinishing or reupholstering furniture rather than trash it). I have incorporated that into our business model as well, over the years: recycle, repurpose, reuse. It will be nice to apply it to our new (OLD) house, also, and let her be the embodiment of the things in which we believe.

Well, I've got another bag started, now, for Savers. At this rate, I could have a large bag of donations a week - how great would that be?! Then, I could start in the shop, before winter officially begins. We needed to move out of our rented storage lockers and we ran out of time to "go through" everything but we were implementing a 50% rule until my husband had a heart attack and time just ran out on us. It truly was helpful to have three boxes going and for every tote we opened, items were sorted into keep/donate/get rid of (either donate or sell), and trash/burn. We were motoring through when life got in the way. I'm looking forward to keeping the momentum from this Ecochallenge going and taking on the shop after I finish packing up the house! I have set the goal that, by this Christmas, 1. we will be moved in and 2. by next Christmas, the house will be 90% finished and the shop organized/offloaded. I don't think I would be so ruthless about either my keep-offload ratio or my deadlines were it not for this challenge.

What would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?

    Chris Odeen's avatar
    Chris Odeen 10/12/2019 4:36 PM
I would like to spend more time reflecting on balance. I find myself consistently stressed out because I'm stretched in so many areas. I downloaded the Bhuddify app to my phone to both use the guided meditations and to simply remind me, when I see the app on my homescreen, that I need to take five and just put things back into perspective. Perhaps I need to say, "No" more. Perhaps I need to search out ways to empower others and not need ME so much. I'm not sure of the answer. But a few minutes to just breathe... That's important, too, and it's not something I've been mindful of doing. I wish to change that. (My blood pressure will thank me! lol)

While I did not select this particular challenge, I agree that I need to find more balance too. I have an Apple Watch and it reminds me to breathe a few times a day. I will admit that I usually just silence this reminder, but I think I need to be more proactive and use it when it chimes. Even doing this simple thing, that only takes a minute or two, will help me find more balance because it will slow me down for just a bit. In those moments I can reflect and take a minute for me instead of everyone else.

I wish that I had seen that Western was doing this challenge, because I would have been completing tasks from the beginning; instead, I only joined the challenge yesterday! But, it is encouraging me! I have an appointment for Western Dairyland to come out and do an Energy Audit at the house we are remodeling (and, ultimately, into which we are going to be moving) to check on the windows. And, yesterday evening, I priced out a personal wind turbine; we are committed to having that up and running before the end of the month, which is exciting. I went out to the property today, since it was so windy, to try to see where is the best place to put it, to take full advantage of wind exposure! A gal in my Human Services cohort mentioned about a local CSA; I intend to get the information from her on Tuesday, and I be joining it this coming week.

I find myself further-motivated, with the challenges. These are already things we'd discussed doing but, with the challenge, I'm, like, "All right! All right! Let's DO this!!!" I committed to myself that we are *NOT* moving everything to the house, from where we are renting, so it's been very exciting to look around and, suddenly, I'm, like, "That doesn't need to come. Not bring that. Not that, either." I am challenging myself, personally, to find 10 things a day, minimum, to donate to Savers, sell, or otherwise find a new home for them. I donated shoes for our local Animal Shelter, as part of their ongoing fundraising. I took two large kitchen bags to Savers, yesterday, when I went to Menards to price out personal wind turbines. No single thing I do may make a huge impact but, collectively? As a group? As a school? As a nation? We can save our planet! It is, truly, up to us!!!

    Food Join a Local CSA
Dependable fresh food, better prices (cutting out carbon-heavy supply chain and grocery stores), supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these benefits (or others not listed here) inspires you the most?

    Chris Odeen's avatar
    Chris Odeen 10/11/2019 8:30 PM
There are a number of things that inspire me, here. I VERY much support farmers (my husband's family are farmers!). I VERY much support fresh fruits/vegetables, not ones that are harvested slightly immature and mature in the process of shipping and distribution; the taste is immeasurable. The prices, however, are problematic for those on a fixed income or are actually living in poverty. Sure the quality suffers, but when Kwik Trip sells onions for $.38/lb, I simply cannot afford Farmers Market prices. HOWEVER, the big boon is when items are available, in this local area, that are NOT available at the local grocer or at Walmart! No one stocks, say, kohlrabi or broccolini, etc. Getting access to "odd" ingredients, which I adore, saves me the environmental reality and cost of driving an hour, to the closest Woodman's. That, in and of itself, is worth the cost!!!

    Energy Upgrade My Windows
How does improving your home's energy efficiency help you better live out your values?

    Chris Odeen's avatar
    Chris Odeen 10/11/2019 8:24 PM
If I can reduce my home's efficiency, it will necessarily reduce the amount of energy that I need to use, both to heat and to cool it. This includes both electricity, and propane (!), which is extremely costly. It's an investment to upgrade the windows, but we have made a commitment to doing so, at least to the worst of the windows, before winter. Yes, it will be expensive, but in the long run, it will save money and reduce our dependency on external energy costs. For the record, we DID install a heat-pump, so we only need to effect outside energy costs when the need is below ground-temperature, for the heat pump. That's going to be a huge bonus!!!

High Impact Action Track Install Alternative Energy
How is your region being affected by climate change? How will it be affected in the future?

    Chris Odeen's avatar
    Chris Odeen 10/11/2019 8:21 PM
Our seasons are changing. One example: maple trees are flowing sap sooner; unfortunately, it's while the sap is still too bitter to produce good syrup! Another example: apple trees begin to bloom sooner; unfortunately, then there's another frost, and the young buds die. Farmers are having problems with crop rotation; the long-season crops can't get in, in time (due to having to wait until the last Spring frost) so that they don't always even mature before the first Winter frost. So, farmers are having to use hybrid seeds (as opposed to heirloom, etc.), that will mature faster. This leads to a deterioration in both taste and quality, in many cases.
