Caitlin's actions
Simplicity
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a walk for 10 minutes each day.
Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Community
Support Native Communities
I will use the resource links provided and spend 30 minutes learning about the native populations that lived in my area prior to colonization, and what I can do to support those that still exist.
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Energy
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Caitlin M. 10/24/2019 10:08 AMI learned that there's always room to grow. I think each step we take to make our lives more sustainable is a positive move in the right direction. It's ok to fail (as I definitely did with my daily walks) and I'll continue trying new things to see what fits with my life.
I'm a little disappointed that I couldn't go back and mark my last few days' actions complete once the challenge ended yesterday. I'm not sure why the EchoChallenge site closed down the check-ins and you can't retroactively check-in, like you could while the challenge was active. So I missed about 3 or 4 days worth of points. Oh well! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Recycle Everything I CanWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Caitlin M. 10/24/2019 10:05 AMPortland has an issue of "wishful recycling." Doing research into what can and can't go into the blue bin makes a big difference. It's been a challenge to find places for some recycling and it's tough to just throw something away. However, I know it's better to toss it in the trash, rather than "contaminate" a bin of recycling. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Go for a Daily WalkFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Caitlin M. 10/21/2019 10:27 AMMaking the time for a walk every day has been refreshing. I take my dog and it's nice to get out and on my feet for a little bit each day. It's a little more difficult in the fall, with the rain, but I've been able to make it out between rainfalls. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Caitlin M. 10/16/2019 9:57 AMOne great way to reduce energy is to turn off the power on the surge protector that everything is plugged in to. I do that with everything in my home office, to ensure no power is used while items aren't in use overnight and on weekends. I could extend that to other places in my home as well.
