REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Forage for My FoodPeople are motivated to forage for many different reasons: as a source for food, a means of income, to connect with nature, to participate in cultural tradition, transmitting specific ecological knowledge, or as a means of stewarding local and native plant populations. What is your chief motivation for foraging?
Christopher Moffitt 10/22/2019 7:33 AMMy chief motivation is my palate. Recently I gathered many pounds of Chanterelle mushrooms and they were amazing! Twice as big as what you can buy in the store and much more flavorful! I had them in a light broth with rice noodles and veggies. Also just plain with garlic and butter. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Buy From a Farmers MarketWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Christopher Moffitt 10/22/2019 7:29 AMWent to Grandpa's Market just north of Lebanon for pumpkins, squash, corn and fun! By buying local produce I am supporting the community and helping to ensure a sustainable future. These small farmers are taken for granted. We need to support them because they may need to support us one day! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Christopher Moffitt 10/03/2019 11:31 AMI would say because there is more of a market to sell it. Poor countries food diversity is very low compared to a rich country. In a large city such as New York, nearly all food has to be shipped in for all the people that live there. You can go to the store and buy anything you want from all around the world. A poor country would be much more dependent on regionally available crops and animals.
The meat industry requires a lot of agricultural resources that could be used more wisely. Irresponsible practices have brought many unwanted side effects. To use large generalities, eating less meat can make you healthier and would contribute to the reduction of air/earth/water pollution.
