Sarah's actions
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 10-minute walk outside each day.
Energy
Online Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Waste
Visit a Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 30 minutes visiting a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about the waste stream.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will spend at least 20 minutes finding out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in my curbside bin.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 1 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 20 minute(s) each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Visit a Waste Management FacilityField trip! What a fun way to learn about our impact and consumption! What facility did you visit? What did you learn? Did you take anyone with you?
Sarah Maas 10/21/2019 2:31 PMI visited Cross Electronic Recycling. They are open Saturday from 10am to 6pm and they will take "anything with a cord." For computers, they have a special room to destroy the hard drives, both with software and with a drill :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Online Energy AuditWhat most interested or surprised you about your own energy footprint?
Sarah Maas 10/04/2019 7:19 AMThat lowering (or raising, depending on the season) the thermostat can result in a 10% energy savings. Now if only I can convince my husband to stop moving the thermostat. Or I should invest in a programmable thermostat that locks! Does anyone have a programmable thermostat that they really like? Where do you set your thermostat? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Sarah Maas 10/03/2019 8:13 AMI found a place to drop old clothes that will be reused even though they are not in the best shape. It's called "Fill the Bin" and it is near 156th and Maple. Shoes, lines, and accessories may also be dropped off. www.fillthebins.com/bin-
Carol White 10/04/2019 5:20 AMThis is good to know. Thanks for the resource.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Sarah Maas 10/03/2019 7:28 AMI pick up the vegetable bags in the produce section without thinking about it. This weekend (my next grocery shopping trip) I plan to use the reusable mesh bags I bought for this purpose! I recycle the vegetable bags, but this way I am cutting down on using them all together!
