Waste Visit a Waste Management Facility
Field trip! What a fun way to learn about our impact and consumption! What facility did you visit? What did you learn? Did you take anyone with you?

I visited Cross Electronic Recycling.  They are open Saturday from 10am to 6pm and they will take "anything with a cord."  For computers, they have a special room to destroy the hard drives, both with software and with a drill :)

That lowering (or raising, depending on the season) the thermostat can result in a 10% energy savings.  Now if only I can convince my husband to stop moving the thermostat.  Or I should invest in a programmable thermostat that locks!  Does anyone have a programmable thermostat that they really like?  Where do you set your thermostat?

    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

I found a place to drop old clothes that will be reused even though they are not in the best shape.  It's called "Fill the Bin" and it is near 156th and Maple.  Shoes, lines, and accessories may also be dropped off.  www.fillthebins.com/bin

    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I pick up the vegetable bags in the produce section without thinking about it.  This weekend (my next grocery shopping trip) I plan to use the reusable mesh bags I bought for this purpose! I recycle the vegetable bags, but this way I am cutting down on using them all together!
