REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Courtney Godwin 10/10/2019 9:39 AMI've started carrying my reusable travel mug with me everywhere and leaving an extra one in my library carrel. That way I can still bring something warm to drink with me even if I don't plan to earlier in the day. What is getting in my way right now is that Black Cat Cafe only serves 12 oz drinks on the meal plan and my mug is a 16 oz. They make my drink in a disposable cup and then pour it into my mug. It drives me crazy! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Courtney Godwin 10/06/2019 9:04 AMCorks can be recycled for free at CHaRM! My dad has saved corks for probably my whole life. He thinks he's going to do an art project with them, but who knows? If I ever were brave enough to get rid of them since they take up space, I could send them to CHaRM for free! Also I realized that I can take my dead hair straightener to the basement of Walters for electronics recycling. I should have figured that one out earlier. I was a little surprised to see that both Delta and Chick-fil-A are sponsors of CHaRM since both companies use a good bit of Styrofoam -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Courtney Godwin 10/05/2019 7:17 AMIn high school, my church youth group went on a mission trip to Guatemala. I was told that my host family would be too poor to even have meat themselves, much less serve it to guests, so my vegetarianism would not be a problem. However, whoever told me that was wrong. I stayed with an incredibly poor family who had just finished renovating their home. The renovations meant that their kitchen now had a roof over it. To put it in perspective, the floors were the dirt of the ground that would flood when it rained. The mattresses that they so selflessly gave up were blocks of wood. In celebration of their roof, they bought a cut of beef and threw a little party to bless the home. My tour guide remarked that the beef probably cost them a months wages. The culture shock was insane; a months wages for something my parents do multiple times a week? The injustice of it all was too much for me. I personally feel like the best thing I've done for the environment throughout my life is giving up red meat. I've been fully pescatarian for a few years now, but I stopped consuming red meat over 12 years ago. My parents were (and still are) dismayed, but my dietary restrictions have helped them to eat more environmentally friendly themselves. When I studied abroad in the Netherlands, I realized for the first time how much money not eating meat saved me. All of my meals were cheaper than my roommates! And, I felt better for not eating animals (Sorry I'm that person) and for the saved methane not sent into the atmosphere through the raising of cows.
