Myra's actions
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 3 meatless meal(s) and/or 3 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 20 minutes learning about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 4 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or some other small improvement.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
High Impact Action Track
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Health
I will spend 20 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Water
Insulate Water Pipes and Water Heater
I will avoid wasting water while waiting for the shower or sink to heat up.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Insulate Water Pipes and Water HeaterHow do you think climate change will affect your region’s water supply? Think about the effects of weather, storms, salinity, and sea level rise, among other changes. How can you find out more about climate change’s impact to your region's water?
Myra Geneske 10/13/2019 6:02 PMClimate change is affecting our water supply by changing the water cycle. The water evaporates and more can be held in the atmosphere when it's warm so we loose some of it that way. We get less snow, and replace some of that moisture with rain which leads to more flooding. Then there's also the water quality which is essentially when the water becomes warmer there is less dissolved oxygen in the water that puts more stress on fish and other aquatic creatures whole also creating a very hospitable environment for bacteria and other things to grow. You can learn more about it by researching your area's water. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Myra Geneske 10/13/2019 5:37 PMEveryone is or will eventually become affected by environmental irresponsibility if we do not change our ways. It starts with the smallest ecosystems being destroyed, and leads to bigger problems. Species are dying out every day, and some of these species are vital to human life.
