Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I have eliminated straws, plastic bags, and bottled water, and now am working on coffee cups.  This one has been the hardest for me because I am often on the road going through a drive thru to get coffee, so I need to be better about keeping a reusable cup in the car for those situations!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Choose Organic Ingredients
It is often said that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” What is your response to that statement?

I think most ideas around sustainability are initially rejected and claimed to be impossible.  But over time by making small changes to our daily habits, what seems impossible can become a reality!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

I walked around our corporate complex and enjoyed the fresh air and beautiful landscaping.  Walking instead of driving allowed me to say hi to people as I passed by, and gave me a chance to soak up some sun and reflect on the day.
