I find the less "stuff" I have, the more free and happy I feel. And the more I use items that my grandmother would recognize, the more my stress level goes down.

How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?

One change that has helped me to avoid acquiring more is to limit any new plastic into my home. If I want a utensil, box or tool of some kind, then the item must be made of wood, metal, bamboo or glass. Sometimes this costs more, and it encourages me to take better care of these items so they will last.

    Simplicity Disconnect from Email
Notice how much time you were spending checking email away from work and make note of that. Now that you have stepped away from it and have not been checking, what changes are you noticing in your thoughts, use of time, stress and energy levels?

My stress has decreased since turning off all alerts on my phone except for text alerts. I've found I don't miss these alerts at all, and I'm never going to turn them back on. I simply spend less time thinking about work when I'm at home and I'm free to enjoy everything else more. Learning to devote time in a focused way to my different responsibilities must involve detaching from technology. I find this especially challenging, but worth it.

How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

I've always enjoyed buying secondhand because it makes me consider purchases I might not have entertained before. When buying new clothes, I try to limit myself to natural fibers, and when economically feasible, purchase directly from textile artists to ensure they are receiving more money for the work.
