Upcycling materials

I Create a lot of things with new materials from stores. My goal is to come up with a new item where the material is sourced from something that already exists. I want to "Upcycle" material to create a new thing. I chose this because reusing items or giving them new life can be a simple, but effective way to help implement change and make an impact.

Food Buy From a Farmers Market
What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

I eat an animal-free diet, including no animal by-products. This is a big step in doing less harm. However, where my vegetables come from is also important. There is an environmental and human impact when food has to be moved over distances. I'm very fortunate to live in a place where farmer's markets and farm stands are readily available. Because of this challenge, I've recently been trying to walk to a farm stand near my house in order to buy local vegetables. Plus, there's a bonus healthy walk involved when I do that!

    Health Happiness
How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

For me, gratitude is a way that I let people know I care about them. I think that showing gratitude makes other people feel good, and therefore it makes me happier. It doesn't necessarily make me feel motivated, but I think it helps the recipients feel more motivated and appreciated.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Recycle Everything I Can
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

Recycling at home has become a bigger challenge than it used to be. More and more things aren't considered recyclable. I've learned that some stores offer recycling of certain products they sell. I've also begun using services offered by TerraCycle. They offer recycling for almost everything you can think of. Some of the options require payment, so it's not necessarily available for everyone, but I feel that if you can afford it, you have a bigger responsibility to do what you can. We have a set of bins in our house labeled with items and we've had this for a month now. Our garbage has been reduced to one half of a bag each week. I've included an image of our recycling bin set up.

Waste Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

It's a tough question and can be hard to find companies that have good business practices. I use the "Good on you" app to find out if companies have good practices and if I know a company doesn't, then I try to avoid them. Thrift store shopping is a really good way to make a positive impact and still have clothing or accessories that show your style. I also sew my own clothing.
