We close our blinds at night and open them during the day everyday for natural light and because our home faces south we were able to get solar on our roof.  That means our electric bill is really low each month.  FYI.

The weather in Central New Jersey has been perfect for opening the windows these past few days and nights.  So we have not used any AC or any Heating of the House yet.  We save on our energy bill and for the environment. I see it as a WIN WIN. :-)

How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

Planting trees is a way to off-site fossil fuel use, if you plant enough. I like to plant a few each year.  Once you plant a tree you must water it for its suvival when its young and not yet established.  As a result of planting a few trees each year, i am outside breathing fresh air as often as I can by watering and checking on the little seedlings.  Breathing fresh air helps my mental, spiritual and physical health. The later is benefitted by me lugging a rain bucket of water over to the seedlings.  It's also fun to watch the little trees grow into big trees.

How might impact investing help you better live your values?

The fossil fuel companies that extract fossil fuel from our land,  transport over our roads impact our land water and air. We need to divest from fossil fuels to save our quality of life (i.e., clean air, clean water and clean soil).  Thanks to environmental groups, investments in fossil fuel projects are not as popular as they once were and companies are shying away from pipeline projects and from insuring coal projects, for example this year.  At https://gofossilfree.org you can fine out more about the divestments from fossil fuel projects around the world that will lead to a better quality of life for all of us living creatures on this planet.

Regarding heating and cooling our home naturally: Although it was very warm yesterday in New Jersey - in the high 80's, since no one was home during the day, we did not have to use our AC and we were lucky the evening cooled down nicely.

I joined the People's EcoChallenge as I do each EcoChallenge in order to learn more of how i can do better and change one habit at a time so that I live more sustainably.  We took out our window air conditioners today and have not turned on the heat yet and it was a bit chilly at 38 F outside this morning.  I encourage everyone to check out each other's postings and see what you can learn or add encouragement too.

What are other ways you could use the power of the sun to reduce your own environmental footprint?

Last night and often this week, we were able to turn off the AC units in our home and open the windows because the evenings were perfect 60-70 degrees F.  Today however, as we are in the 90 F the AC are on during the day.  Tonight will be all together different as we expect a 30 degree decrease in outside air temperature. We also have solar panels on our home's roof in the front as we face south and they are working well to reduce our electricity bill.

What is the main water source in your region?

    Carey Compton's avatar
    Carey Compton 10/02/2019 12:48 PM
The main water source in my region other than rain (40" per year plus in recent years) is ground water which is used for drinking water.  Our household also has rain buckets (because the barrels cracked due to freezing) that we empty 2 days after each rain to water plants and trees (due to the excess heat we've had in NJ, trees are stressed and we've tried to help them out.

I am so thankful for the rain we are getting now in Central New Jersey.  We are expecting 40 mph winds but other than that, I won't have to water the trees small and large for a while.  So Happy am I. :-)

I plan to travel this Oct. but won't use air flights (mainly because I don't need to really).
