Fong Peng's actions
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Transportation
Work from Home
I will work from home 1 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
Transportation
Go by Bike
I will commute by bike 2 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to 4.68 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go by BikeHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking, or driving?
Fong Peng Chong 10/23/2019 3:32 AMWith walking, biking or taking public transport, we tend to have more people interaction than taking a car. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Work from HomeIt takes the average worker in the United States 26 minutes to travel to work. One way to fix long commutes would be to make cities more affordable. An even simpler option: promote the use of telework. Are you in an industry that would allow you to work from home? What are some obstacles you might find yourself facing while working from home?
Fong Peng Chong 10/06/2019 7:00 PMI appreciated HP's flexible working arrangement which enabled me to work remotely from home. Some obstacles could be when there are IT issues that prevented access to intranet and documents stored in sharepoint & shared drives. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Fong Peng Chong 10/01/2019 10:33 PMPlastic bags and straws and paper cups! Will use reusable bag as much as possible. Not taking any straw when we buy drinks at stores. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Fong Peng Chong 10/01/2019 10:32 PMDon't buy unnecessary things, only if we need them. Don't take freebies which are not useful. Reuse the plastic box or cartons to hold household items. Repair items or mend clothes and shoes if possible. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Recycle Everything I CanWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Fong Peng Chong 10/01/2019 10:28 PMMost difficult part of recycling for me is to know what can or cannot be recycled, and how to clean up and separate out the materials so that I do not contaminate the items. Looking at the plastic numbering do help, but I wish there could be simpler means. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Fong Peng Chong 10/01/2019 10:26 PMI try to put one reusable bag in my bag pack, in the car, in my pouch etc. Basically ensure that most of the time I would have access to a reusable bag when I need one.
