REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Choose a Carbon OffsetA round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?
Lacy Cagle 10/19/2019 10:13 AMI need to combine trips, which would be easier to do for me than others since I work remotely and can work from anywhere. I drive or take the train when I can. I wish we had more trains that actually had reasonable trips times. From St Louis, it only really makes sense to take Amtrak to Kansas City or Chicago, maybe Milwaukee. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Lacy Cagle 10/19/2019 9:42 AMThe people most impacted by environmental degradation in my community are black and brown children and poorer people. Black children have significantly higher asthma rates and instances of lead poisoning than white children in the same neighborhoods do. Black communities/neighborhoods have much higher rates of illegal dumping happening in their neighborhoods and less safe access to parks and green spaces. Poorer neighborhoods have higher cancer rates and more exposure to lead through water pipes and paint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Lacy Cagle 10/16/2019 6:49 PMYES! Spending less time outdoors means we are less connected to the biotic community, less resilient, and less aware of our impact on this place we call home. Spending time outdoors surrounded by things other than the ones we have made can make us more humble, more connected, and more grounded. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Lacy Cagle 10/16/2019 6:47 PMI should always carry a foldable/collapsible bag in my car and purse -- I used to!-
Laurette Kelley Dixon 10/18/2019 8:28 AMThis challenge has definitely made me think about it more often. I bought one item yesterday and ask the person to just let me carry it out without the bag.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Lacy Cagle 10/08/2019 11:10 AMI'm not going to lie - meat tastes good and makes me full much faster than eating fruits and veggies. Eating a lot of meat used to be a cultural marker for having enough money to eat more meat, and now it is associated with Western cultural standards.
CAFOs offer inhumane living conditions for animals, but people are also poorly affected by working in slaughter houses and by pollution from manure holding ponds. -
