This challenge also helped me to create my own challenge, the Jewelry swap was a huge success and I was so excited to see people I love take home new pieces and pass on their pieces, really awesome experience! REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Becca Cable 10/25/2019 12:09 PMNothing is standing in my way I have made the full switch, I bring my tumbler outside my work place and now I dont have any excuse to not use reusable! -

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn More about Food DesertsWhat are the implications of access to nutritious food for a community?
Becca Cable 10/16/2019 9:10 AMI didn't realize that even large cities like Seattle could be afflicted by food deserts. I always thought that Food Deserts was simply access to a grocery store in your neighbor.But really, it's having access to a location that has fresh and healthy food available. But without the availability of products people are left without choice. Corner stores don't want to take up space with fresh food, yet they are more often than not the only option in many low-income communities. As a result families etiher find a way an make the time to get to a grocery store or face diet-related diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Why aren't we mandating that these locations have access? If grocery chains want to operate in our cities and communities, why can't we also mandate that they operate within a reasonable radius of communities that don't have access, similar to low income house mandates. There are things we can do to share access. -
Becca Cable 10/16/2019 8:53 AMToday, I wanted to spend time working on an Energy Audit. Unfortunately I don't qualify as my partner and I live on a boat in less than 150 square feet of space and the audit required at least 250. We use a compostable toilet, and out water is pumped to us through a tank. We don't have a dish washer or a washer dryer. We don't use the shower on board as it gets our entire bathroom wet so I shower at work at or the marina. This look back made me think of the ways that we have changed our lives the past year and how much less of an impact we have made by subscribing to tiny living. While I can't technically complete the challenge I think we working toward a greener future. -
Becca Cable 10/14/2019 9:02 AMI have organized a Jewelry swap with friend for 10/23!! Looking forward to sharing pieces that I used to wear with people that are looking to rev up their current accessories. Someone else will get the chance to wear something I once loved and give it new life!! And I in turn will get to pick out new jewelry and accessories for me to wear knowing that we contributed to a buy-nothing-share-economy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Becca Cable 10/11/2019 12:21 PMThis practice of bringing a reusable water bottle is 98% permanent habit. I took this challenge because the times that I found myself breaking this rule this past year were small moments that should have been avoided like a meeting with water bottles on the table. I can and will get up and go get a cup of water and not be part of plastic bottle waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Becca Cable 10/11/2019 12:07 PMWhen I have that "oh no, I forgot my reusable bag moment" I ask myself a few things.
What do I need to buy today and can I carry all the items without a bag?
If I do need a bag then I buy new reusable bags - shout out to Trader Joes!
The systems that we have put in place to remember our reusable bags are;
1. sticky note reminder on the door, "did you remember your reusable bags?"
2. Placing reusable bags in our cars when we don't need them so they are there when we do.
3. Holding each other accountable when we do forget bags and skip the store if its not necessary.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Becca Cable 10/11/2019 11:59 AMRepair is a big one for my life style. Living on a boat helps me to repair the items in my life that I need instead of buying a new one when an existing item is no longer usable. I am working to help friends and neighbors take this same approach and fix current boat items instead of purchasing new ones.
