Julie's actions
Transportation
Use Public Transit
I will use public transit 22 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to 4.87 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Community
Support Native Communities
I will use the resource links provided and spend 10 minutes learning about the native populations that lived in my area prior to colonization, and what I can do to support those that still exist.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 10 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Transportation
Work from Home
I will work from home 1 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 15 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 15-minute walk outside each day.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Work from HomeIt takes the average worker in the United States 26 minutes to travel to work. One way to fix long commutes would be to make cities more affordable. An even simpler option: promote the use of telework. Are you in an industry that would allow you to work from home? What are some obstacles you might find yourself facing while working from home?
Julie Brown 10/22/2019 5:45 PMThere are several ways that the architecture industry can allow for working from home. It's not always feasible due to scheduled face-to-face meetings and the need to connect more readily with team members. Working from home also removes obstacles for me though, in that it saves me 1.5hrs in commute time, with less exposure to cold and flu season, saves on time spent styling hair and putting on makeup, and lets me fit small chores like laundry into my lunch/break times. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Support Native CommunitiesIndigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?
Julie Brown 10/21/2019 7:34 AMBalance is not just important to sustainability, but crucial. To be sustainable, something must able to be maintained at a certain rate or level, and balance is the act of keeping two sides equal in measure or action. -
Julie Brown 10/15/2019 8:03 AMJust one week left in the challenge! Let's keep up the momentum. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Julie Brown 10/10/2019 1:20 PMOne of the implications for a culture that spends of its time indoors is that it dulls your curiosity and desire to learn about nature. Overheard in a store recently:
Person 1: "honey badger doesn't care!"
Person 2: "what's a honey badger? Is that a bird?"

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Julie Brown 10/09/2019 7:51 AMWalking allows me to notice smaller details of my neighborhood and city, and generally improves my mindset. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Use Public TransitThe US spends roughly 20% of its federal budget on defense. In contrast, 2% goes to education, 20% goes to social security and 3% goes to transportation infrastructure. Do these numbers surprise you at all? Why or why not? How would you adjust them if you could?
Julie Brown 10/08/2019 8:11 AMWay more funding needs to go to education, social security, and infrastructure. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Julie Brown 10/07/2019 9:07 AMWhat stands in my way of making a habit of using a reusable coffee (tea) cup is planning ahead. My chai purchases tend to be on impulse, so I generally never have a mug on hand. What I do have on hand is my phone, and the ability to mobile-order the chai to be ready when I get to the coffee shop. And ordering ahead means an automatic disposable cup. :(
