Matt's actions
Health
Take Control
Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Waste
Launch a Recycling Program
I will start a recycling program at my workplace or school. If a recycling program exists, I will advocate for ways to improve and expand it.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
I will spend 30 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper each day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
Health
Know My health
I will get my Core Four Biometrics tests (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI).
High Impact Action Track
Research Impact Investing
Simplicity
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing and deterimine if it is right for me.
High Impact Action Track
Plant Trees
Nature
I will plant 1 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Matt Bowgren 10/19/2019 8:46 PMI like to listen to them and watch them in the breeze. I also love pines in the winter, with the green and the white snow. We don't have any evergreens near our home right now, but we plan on planting aan evergreen privacy hedge next spring. We planted a new tree in the front yard this week to replace one we'd lost in a storm years ago. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Research Impact InvestingHow might impact investing help you better live your values?
Matt Bowgren 10/19/2019 8:44 PMWhat we invest our money in is what happens in the world. I imagine if people valued providing low-income services as much as making more money, we'd see dramatically different innovations - similar to what the Gates Foundation is doing. A small part of what they're doing involves impact investing with actual monetary returns possible (e.g. TerraPower) - that's what I'm looking for, but it's difficult on a small scale to have an impact with traditional stock market investing. -
Matt Bowgren 10/18/2019 8:47 AMContinued the quest to remove myself from mailing lists with a few more phone calls yesterday to charities. Charities are interesting because they aren't required to check your address again the national opt-out lists and they aren't required to provide an opt-out. We only donate regularly to a few charities, so I don't need their mail and especially not from the charity I donated $50 once to four years ago. They've probably spent a good quarter of that sending me mail... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Launch a Recycling ProgramHow might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems differently?
Matt Bowgren 10/17/2019 1:52 PMContrary to the recycling message, big-picture thinking leads to realizations like this from an MIT researcher: "we should trash all our recyclable plastic" -https://www.insider.com/mit-research-andrew-mcafee-says-recycling-is-useless-2019-10. Big systems problems require focusing our resources and the only way to do that is to stop doing something else the way we're already doing it. If we're not willing to sacrifice one effort for another, then we're just whining. Best case scenario - your new solution has integrative benefits that reach beyond the original problem. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my HomeTo what extent do you believe that environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?
Matt Bowgren 10/16/2019 12:57 PMI stopped with the anti-bacteria everything - buying a plant-based cleaning product instead for most of our daily duty cleaning. Having clean surfaces and clean air just makes a home more enjoyable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Go get a check upHow do you practice self care?
Matt Bowgren 10/16/2019 12:56 PMBy looking in the mirror and remembering what I was and what I'm working towards - I don't feel like myself and I remind myself that getting to where I want takes daily action, not something I can just decide to do down the road. Health is not something that can always be recovered as a matter of will -- I need daily discipline. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Switch to Cold WaterWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Matt Bowgren 10/16/2019 12:54 PMTake my wife out for dinner and not worry about the cost of the babysitter ;) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Matt Bowgren 10/16/2019 12:53 PMBecause it tastes wonderful! There is no doubt in my mind that meat just tastes better, with less effort (I mean, cooking a steak only takes salt and pepper and a pan or grill), than many of the veggie dishes I've had. There may be something deeper to it, such as vegan dishes always seem like they're missing something to me. When I eat strictly vegetarian, I generally end up consuming more carbs - pasta and bread - but those things are no doubt better for the planet and don't take up as many resources to grow.
I'm a work in process, so I'm still figuring out how to eat to reflect my tastes and values at the same time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Take ControlHow do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?
Matt Bowgren 10/16/2019 12:49 PMAs I improve my health through more conscious eating habits, it naturally leads to food choices that are better for the environment. Also, as I work to improve my own health and share the journey with others, or they simply witness it, I think it leads others to do the same, thereby improving community health. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Matt Bowgren 10/16/2019 12:46 PMIt's surprisingly difficult to get off of some paper-mailing lists, but the less mail I see in my mailbox, the better. So far I've been able to get off all of the lists for things I've received this week.
