James's actions
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 5 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 3 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day this week.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
James Black 10/18/2019 9:22 AMI typically don't take straws and have a reusable cup when I buy coffee or tea. I do use plastic vegetable bags at the grocery story when I buy broccoli but not for most other produce. I could reuse plastic grocery bags for this purpose or a fabric bag. I use plastic garbage bags, but because we recycle, that's only one bag a week, although I'd love to have a different solution. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity necessary for practicing simplicity?
James Black 10/16/2019 8:19 AMOptions that seem to be the simplest are usually marketed as such and have hidden complications. For example, highly processed foods are easy to prepare but usually full of ingredients we don't even think about. Simplicity requires time to learn about many options so we can use creativity to come up with solutions we want and understand. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
James Black 10/09/2019 8:24 AMI would guess that people in richer countries eat more meat because the process is expensive, so only wealthy countries can afford to set up the necessary infrastructure to produce and process meat. Eating meat supports a sector that exploits/destroys more and more natural resources in the short term, and in the long term, our planet will not be able to sustain us.
