High Impact Action Track

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Waste

Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

When I forget my net bags for fruit and veg I just buy what I can put loose in my trolley.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health More Fruits and Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

Eating less meat saves valuable plant material that would otherwise go to feed animals. Eating more fruit and veg is healthy for me and means less will be wasted. But I am concerned that overprodauction of some fruit and veg to supply trends e.g. avocados will mean poorer countries may cut down other trees or stop growing basic crops they need to satisfy overseas demand.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Buy From a Farmers Market
What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

I could eat less meat, especially beef.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

I would accept a disposable bag and reuse it, finally recycling it at Morrison's, where they do recycle thin bags.
I usually keep a folding shopping bag in my handbag and a normal one in the boot of the car.
