Mussels are my weakness! Ideas for what to do with mussel shells? I'll freeze raw shrimp shells to make stock later.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

I've tried to be good about bringing a reusable mug with me all month (even while traveling to a conference!). The hardest part is making room for it in my bag when it's empty. It takes some planning not just to remember the mug, but also to think about how to manage/carry it afterwards. I'm glad I've been using it though, less trash in the landfill!

I have fruit flies in my compost tumbler :( ... luckily it is a common problem and (hopefully) should be an easy fix.

I am adding more brown materials like leaves, twigs, sawdust, dried plant material such as hay, unprinted paper, fabrics, unwaxed cardboard, or dryer lint, so this should help. Here is a helpful guide for anyone else experiencing fruit flies in their compost https://compostguide.com/keeping-fruit-flies-out-of-compost/

Tonight I made breakfast for dinner for a whole foods meal - frittata with spinach, mushrooms, and asparagus, plus roasted potatoes. Yum!

After spending most of the day sitting at a desk and commuting, we owe it to ourselves to get our bodies moving and exercise,  especially if you can enjoy the fall weather, too! 🍂🍁

Prepping meals for tomorrow and my countertop compost collector is filling up with fruit and vegetable scraps. Need to make sure I balance it all out with dried leaves and straw when I add it to the tumbler.

In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

Fennel is a great vegetable that you can use all of! The tops I put on salad or in dressing, while the bulb gets simmered in with onions and garlic to make a good sauce!

I love beet greens as much as I love roasted beets! I'll saute or braise beet greens or even through them in soups.

I prepared a document for some colleagues about the focus topics of an upcoming conference we are attending. This helps them to prepare for discussion on topics like Nsture Based Solutions and Climate Finance!

    Food
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

Made a vegan shake today thanks to Ben & Jerry’s non-dairy peanut butter ice cream!

In the US, subsidies through the USDA on animal feed as well as animal husbandry convolute the market price of animal products. This makes meat “cheaper” than it actually is, ignoring the true cost of meat.
