I bought a coffee mug tree at the flea market and a variety of nice looking mugs of various sizes for work. I am asking my co-workers to choose a mug instead of paper cup and plastic lid.

SCREEN-FREE after 6 PM. Just in time before the end of the challenge I was able to have a screen free dinner. Instead of a laptop, I paid a little attention to an attractive table setting. The quiet and the serene view out the window was my reward. And the food tasted especially good. In the same vein, I also moved my laptop out of my bedroom. This changed the whole atmosphere of my evening routine. At last I broke the habit of watching news, writing emails, and using the internet during meals and at bedtime.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

I would rather use this money towards organic and sustainable foods. The $1500 annual estimate is $28.80 per week saved by not wasting food. I can use that saving to replace bargain groceries with organic produce and proteins, which are often more expensive. Instead of walking past the organic produce and proteins in the store, I can go ahead and choose them, knowing that by not wasting food this week, I actually "banked" almost $30 towards better quality and more sustainable foods.

Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?

This is a hard challenge. I work all day and get home late, so I prepare a nice meal and combine dinner with watching my favorite news channels. It is hard to break this habit.

How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

This is tough. I don't seem to think of exercising with any anticipation of enjoying it, even though i know there is an inherent benefit. It is said that exercise releases "endorphins" in the brain what actually does make one feel pleasant. I don't think I have ever tried to be consciously aware of that feeling. An experiment: go to the gym and ride the bike or swim about 12 laps. Then sit quietly and make a conscious effort to be aware of how I feel. Is there a pleasurable feeling from released endorphins? I will try this experiment  tomorrow after work.

We're having one in Gainesville, FL on Friday (tomorrow) at City Hall in the evening.  There will be environmental groups tabling and it should be a good time!

Sometimes I feel so angry yet so helplessly complicit at the problems in the world that it feels like I am choking. Today I watched the young kids testifying in Congress for Climate Change and they were powerful. The little girl from Sweden said, "tell the children the truth and they will get angy and want to make change in the world.)  WOW!

What would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?

I need to feel less overwhelmed and anxious by effect of the greed and oppression in the world. I recently stumbled on a passage from C.S. Lewis in a letter to his good friend Owen Barfield during the horrors of war in Europe in June 1940. Lewis tells his friend, “The real difficulty is...to adapt ones steady beliefs about tribulation to this particular tribulation; for the particular, when it arrives, always seems so intolerable.” And he then goes on to say,  “Two things fill the mind with ever-increasing wonder and awe, the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me.” And in these words there seems to be a marvellous high mystery hiding, that gives hope in the courage and goodness in others and in oneself to not only get through the trouble, but to be somehow a force of good.

I checked off all the actions I already do. Now to focus on the actions that are hard to make into a good habit, like daily exercise. In September I will ramp up to be ready for my 30 minutes a day challenge. I will be at the pool on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday after work to "get my feet wet" and everything else, too. For me, numbers are fun, I calculated metrics for lap distance. This week I will for at least 6 laps. Next week I will build up to 8 laps and so on until I am at 16 laps (half mile). Then I will start tracking speed (time). There will be many temptations to skip the exercise. Regardless, this is how it will be.

I am making spreadsheets for each  day in October to focus my attention on the challenges I selected and track my progress in strengthening good habits. At the 2018 challenge I printed the spreadsheets - not the best way to apply good habits!
