Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

I had a great time doing this challenge. I've been able to change regular habits and I plan to continue these after the challenge ends. Thank you!

We went to the farmers market at the pumpkin patch. It was a lot of fun and we got some fun stuff to make salsa with! I'm happier with the quality of the fruit and veggies we got. Catie is a fan.

How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

I'll be real - I don't eat a lot of veggies at home. For the last week I have been making sure my lunches include more veggies than normal - I even tried a Red Robin burger with a lettuce wrap instead of a bun and I REALLY enjoyed it! Adding the extra fruit has made my daughter happy in the morning, I feel more energized and over-all more positive.

What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I really, really enjoy using a straw. I love drinking Diet Coke through a straw. This challenge is going to be hard for me. I have purchased a reusable straw but I am not enjoying that it’s made of metal. So I’m going to look for one made with different materials. I have started to bring my own shopping bags and I have been using my own starbucks cup for the last few years. I would like to get my husband to do this, too.

How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

My husband and my mom got a Fitbit tracker, we have started to do weekly challenges. I have fallen a bit behind during the warm weather so I am ready to start going to the gym on my lunches.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

Started to meal prep lunches for my daughter to bring to school. I measured out the portions and prepped it on Saturday. So far, it has been so much easier than prepping a new meal each night for her lunch the next day.

And to answer the second part of this question, I’d rather use the money on a Range Rover but that is not eco friendly so I GUESS I’d rather use it to save for my daughter’s future.
