REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Chris Piping Plover Wingate 10/03/2019 9:58 AMWe have tried to use our own composting bin at home to turn it into usable soil, but we didn't realize that you actively need to manage it on a regular basis and "feed it" regularly as well. Once Minneapolis started offering city-wide composting, we switched immediately and now compost always instead of sporadically. It is amazing that our compost trash bin fills almost as fast as our trash bin when composting is combined with an effort to curb non-reusable packaging. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Chris Piping Plover Wingate 10/03/2019 9:56 AMImpediment 1: Fear of spills. Coffee mugs need one heck of a strong sealing mechanism if they are going to earn their place in my backpack next to my computer.
Impediment 2: Fear of foam. Drip coffee into reusable containers is no problem. Not understanding the amount of coffee and foam in large cappuccino orders leads one to wonder whether or not they will fit into a reusable container. Coffee shops are now way more open to put these creations into reusable containers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Chris Piping Plover Wingate 10/03/2019 9:53 AMTraveling long distances by car for work makes refilling reusable water bottles difficult. If you fill them up at restaurants, it is ok. But the more frequent stops at gas stations are a new impediment. Gas stations have gone away from offering free water as water sales have gone up. I now need to purchase bottled water just to use the restroom.
